Garda 'OFFICIAL' position...

This was meant to be a peaceful march wasn't it?

as far as i can see the marchers dressed up, threw soil on the ground, and created as much mayhem as possible on the streets.

Was this march authorised originally? Were the cases with the car being filled with smoke, the guys dressing up in leather belts, and the general soil throwing a minority or was it generally an accepted way for the crowd. If so, i think the guards did right.

Breaking the law with such numbers should be given a response.

however thats not what i was saying. I was enquiring why there was so much trouble beforehand? The pictures that have been shown here, are not what i would expect of peaceful protestors... Do you believe in the law? Do you think that just because you go out on a march protesting, that you have the right to break those laws?

Those semi naked people are welcome to do that at home, but not in public, where children might see them. Its against the laws of the state. As for the car, it looks like a piece of senseless violence. What was it meant to signify? defy us and we'll do it for real?

But why were you protesting? do you have a car? what has throwing soil on the ground got to do with your protest? i cant really see your point?

When you go out protesting against society at large dont expect the state, and the gardai to ignore you. From what i've seen, and heard abt this march some of you came looking for trouble and found it.

why not go out and proest the injustices that happen to gardai?

I was a photographer at the Burgh quay section of RTS, I have photographic proof that Gardai removed their ID numbers, actual photos of them removing them on the street after being posted there beofre the first baton charge. I would like to see the Garda press office explain this one.

Soil Throwing ???

A small patch of soil with flowers and a little border was constructed (not thrown) beside where the main party was on going for most of the day on Burg Quay, Gardaí proceded to scatter this all over the road and no it was not causing an obstruction at he time.

Lawbreaking?

The gardaí were brutal the only law most people could have been charged with was Jaywalking and don't belive we have such a law in this country.

They certainly used excessive force againist a lot of innocent people, if you actually saw what happened I'm sure you would agree.

I also witnessed them ignoring pleas for ambulance assistance for one protester who could not walk who was on the ground and had a broken or severly injured leg, either waythe guy could not walk.

There were Gardaí without their badge numbers displayed. I did witness a few. I did not however witness any Gardaí taking them off.
(then again I didn't see everything)

Did anyone else happen to see this ???

Hopefully justice is done and the Gardaí involved get repremanded accordingly.

when the way that they dress is offensive, then yes it is against the law. This is not Australia, with the mardai gra... This march took place in our nations capital, where children were out. I dont really want to have my niece see guys dressed like that, walking down o'connell street with their bits hanging out.

as for the car, the car was purchased for the purpose of throwing in a flare? do you not agree that it caused some mayhem? It sounds a bit much for such a peaceful demonstration.

the soil was a representation (in my perception)of the pleasure of a garden in contrast to the street. there is so much land devoted to streets and car parks that could, with plants, not only improve the athetic value of the city, but the air quality as well.

the destruction of the private car was not a threat, but a symbolic way to show an overall dislike for cars

the part of the protest that you unfortunatly cant see are those of people dancing, drumming, playing trad music, face painting, dressed up in pink/green/and overall non-offensive costumes, hugging, and enjoying themselves, i am sorry that the one sided view you were given skewed the reality of the day

I am a standard member of the community and I am happy with globalisation, its forcing would be crackpots into smaller and smaller areas. Its signifiantly reducing the probability of further wars, and slowly but surely increasing everybodies standard of living.

Since no anti-capitalist has ever offered any constructive suggestions, it seems the best way to proceed is globalist capitalism.

As for reclaiming the streets, I doubt you have ever paid taxes, therefore, since your rights only exist through people like me allowing you to exist, you should be happy that you are even allowed on the streets.

Many countries are far less tolerant of outspoken minorities whose only purpose is to stir trouble. Be glad Ireland is kind to you. Leave my streets free, and stay away from my car!

I was visiting my friend for the weekend had great fun, great weather. Went to the International Disobedience day had great fun just lazing in the park a few gards nothing much.
Was going back Mon on the 4pm Bus to Galway so I thought I'd head along to this thing with several friends.
My friend told me that the gards MIGHT block off the streets making it hard for me to get through to the bus stop but he then said he was probably being paranoid.
We got to the garden of rememberence at 1:55 and there were only 5 people there, thought it might be a bust but at 2pm about 10-20 people showed up at once with more gradually coming in.
The cyclists set off at 2:20 down O'Connell street. We followed waving our paper flags we'd made earlier. The cyclists headed off a side street so we just went down to the GPO. Noticed a few garda vans and officers standing around chatting. Had fun watching the women dancing (and also a 5 y/o girl :) ) with their swirly things. then around 2:40 the cyclists came up from the quay and we were told to follow the four people with the flags. We did and had great fun running past these shocked gardai down into Burgh quay. From then until I left around 3:40 it was just great craic, We planted our weed plants in the garden and went down danicng around the farther set of drums. Both sides of the road had gards standing there only around 4-5 at the East end and a side street was blocked off too.
As I said I left at 3:40 and the last thing I saw was from the bus everyone dancing having fun.

At around 8:30pm another friend called from the dart station and said that her boyfriend told her to leave the city centre. She'd been working and was about to go to the party. He said that he'd been beaten up by several gardai. He'd just been trying to get in touch with someone - he'd only been walking through it when the gards attacked him.
That was all my friend knew she was heading out to Darthy ( or some place ) and said she'd ring us back.
We got in touch with another girl who said that she'd left earlier and was at her mothers. She was as shocked to hear about it as we obviously were.
We eventually got in touch with my friend who had himself been hit several times. They had gone down to the Pearse street gard station to lodge complaints and were told that they'd have to wait until the Sergeant arrived. Needless to say the sergeant (who is supposed to constantly be on duty ) never arrived. All the grada stations across Dublin were giving out the same message to anyone who wanted to complain.
Some guy then did a hand stand in the Gard station. a grad came up to him and struck him hard across his legs knocking him to the floor.
My friend had actually seen a Gard strip off his ID no. then go in and puch a 15 y/o girl right in the face. Completely unprovoked.
Everything else I've heard about this has been from the news. I was surprised to find that there was not even a mention of this in the 9:00 news yesterday and when the news item eventually appeared on Aertel it only had the official Garda statement.

Does that seem fair and just to you? Maybe you'd like to highlight the part that gave the gards the right to rush in with batons injuring innocent people.
And even if you dont consider the demonstrators innocent maybe you'd like to tell me why a 17 year old girl who was out Bank holiday shopping should now be in hospital with a broken leg and 7 stitches to her head?
You just can't seem to admit that the Gardai actually went out of control and started beating the hell out of anyone they saw.

Liberal leftie journo just back into to town after a year in Santa Cruz CA. Witnessed the whole thing on Monday had camera smashed, mobile phone crushed for trying to get a camera team out on the street when the original charge happened. Also have incredibly swollen bollocks from a rather painful run in with a baton. Take away the pain but keep the swelling.

I do think that some of the protesters were looking for trouble. Or at the very least thought they would get away with things they normally wouldn't try. I've been on some student marches in my day, and I know the mood. You always get some twits who cause trouble. There were reports of Gards being taunted and even some minor assualts.

That said, the Gards obviously overacted. It seems that some of them certainly did remove their id numbers. This is probably the biggest mistake they made. It shows the arrogence of a force who believe it can get away with anything.

The Gards in this country are a law onto themselves. The Garda Complaints Board is a joke. While Grads police fellow Gards, there can be no justice for people wronged by our police force.

What is sad aout our so called enlightened society, where tribunals are supposidly uncovering all the curroption and back scratching which was going on over the last 30 to 40 years, is that we really have a long way to go. Nothing will come of this. The protestors will not be charged and there will be no action taken against any Gards.

The innocent victims of these assaults will take a long time to recover.

Just a comment on yesterdays "Reclaim the streets " protest. Across from The Central Bank a female pedestrian cyclist who had absolutely no involvement in the protest was pushed off her bike by Gardai and then severely beaten with batons by a number of Garda, she was then dragged into a police van. It was a peaceful protest and we had no intention of causing any harm or trouble. The police used excessive force on anyone that got in their way. A 12 year old boy who was walking in the same direction as the protest was also beaten up by two Garda, one kicked him to the ground and held him down while the other kicked him repeatedly in the leg. He had extremely bad bruising and was barely able to walk because he was limping so badly. Once again he had nothing to do with the protest.

Also if anyone needs banners or posters painted or spraypainted I can do it if you buy me the materials.....for future demo's etc

I'm telling you,I'd shed no tears if in a few years time,I saw the same young loonatic Guard vegetating in a wheelchair.

Are the Gardai not trained in how to deliver truncheon beatings;ie;to the torso,as opposed to the head?Are there not supposed to be snatch squads,etc?All I saw was a gang of kids sitting on the street,and suddenly being reefed by the Gardai.Just remembering that one young Guard makes my blood boil.I'm sure some of the more hippy types have thrown bad magick his way.Fuck his mother.

I was not at the protest, but I was shocked by what I saw in the papers. What a load of rubbish being written into this page by fascist hawks. First of all let's establish the following facts.

1. It is the right of all persons to protest. Those people that went out and founded states like this little one would even say that it is your duty, even if it is against your material interests.

2. Globalisation is contributing to a widening of world poverty, disimprovement of living standards in most of the world and a denegration of rights, and permanent damage to the environment as more and more decisions are made by corporations and fewer by elected governments.

3. Whatever alleged behaviour occurs within a protesting crowd does not diminish the responsibility of An Garda Síochana to behave properly, justly and with restraint.

4. Wheter a person is a taxpayer or not they have rights, including the rights to protest, the right to an opinion and the right to physical safety. The comments I saw earlier show up the materialistic view and ignorance of citizenship that some people hold.

5. Protests like this are inevitable when issues that effect the future health and welfare of the country are swept aside. Even the government (when they do raise it) can't convince many wealthy people to recycle their waste, use public transport, feel positivly towards disadvantaged communities or think about how we trade with the rest of the world.

6. Examine the facts that Ethnic Minorities have no faith whatever in An Garda Síochana and that this incident has it's roots in past police heavy-handedness which went unpunished.

No sane person can thus begin to finger point and scapegoat what seems to have been a peaceful protest.

Please ask your colleagues in the TV department to play the tape as it was originally broadcast and compare this with what was shown later - I think you will find that there is a vast difference, in tone, content and emphasis.

Just bye the bye, who instigated the change? - a TV news editor wanting a more succinct sound and video bite, an embarrassed Garda Press Office after the commissioner saw it, or the Dept of Justice after they viewed the news.

I'd be interested in hearing the views of your listeners and the TV news people (editing is our business and we brook no interference , blah blah, etc.)

It all depends how one interperets Nietzche.To begin with,those writings that had an overtly anti semite tone were the ones edited by his sister.In another work by Nietzche,he actually slags off the Germans for their anti semitism-(I think it is Beyond Good and Evil).I cannot remember the exact quote,but it basically promotes the Jews for their "Will to Power" with regards to fending for themselves.

Nietzche is,in Christian terms,a moral relatavist.He would have seen himself as pragmatic,realising that one had to adapt one's morality to suit modern times.

Nietzche accepted nature,not nazism.Because I have been reading a bit of the3 guy,his ideas slipped in when I was slagging off that Corcoran shite.

I can't speculate what the backgrounds of the other attenders of the RTS were,
but I went, with my Mum (who works in the Guarda HQ BTW)
We are not from d4 (try d22)
I work and pay taxes and support events such as the one we enjoyed up untill the cops went apeshit

What is it that makes folk think anyone with an active conscience must be a dole bluddger from a mansion (a contradiction in terms me thinks)

get real and lighten up on what other people wear, there are more important areas to criticise

when we see the brutality of police in other countries we are used to these images being accompanied by Private property being smashed (by people other than the owners) and general mayhem aggresive apparently caused by the crowd
these scenes do not justify police brutality, so why is it even in question that what happened last monday (remember no injured cops, no reports of damage to public/private property except by the cops) may be right or wrong?

I think the footage of the protest that we all saw spoke for its self, ..maybe the protesters where out of control or intimidating towards the Gardai, so what!! The fact is that Gardai where sent in who had no training in Riot control , even though there was a Gardai riot control squad on standby. The Gardai can only blame themselves for what happened especially that tall tanned wanker with no identification numbers who went slap happy with his mates on a bunch of girls. it's always been the same - the cops pick on the weak -hassling motorists, protesters and girls.
I remember being a teen 20 years ago and being harrassed under the misuse of drugs act 1977, getting strip searched on suspicion...all because we had long hair.

The crazy thing is that all the scum bags who commit real crimes are out unmolested beating up people in Westmoreland Street at 2am, selling drugs openly on Dublin's streets.

The Gardai save for a few decent skins are a pack of stupid culchie morans who support back handed nod and wink, fair play te ya mentality who cannot see the difference between a few weird hippies having a laugh and bringing a bit of fun into the juggernaut belching streets and a gang of joyriding skinheads and tree breakers breaking the windows of some poor sod in Clondalkin.
