Ben Pile brands the Government's 'growth agenda' as empty political theatre, with wooden actors stumbling through hollow lines, written by someone who has no clue what growth actually is.

after Feb15. where are you invited? where are we going?

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Tuesday February 11, 2003 15:21author by psi phi Report this post to the editors

republics continued.

You are all cordially invited to the Karnaval 2003
Marseilles.
if you want to rave for peace without political prejudice skip to the €€€€€ for details.

You are not all cordially invited to the EU summit in Greece on the EU approach to Iraq.
The EU approach to Iraq is presently being constructed through Greece at a cost of two billion euros. The "trans-balkan" motorway when finished will allow drivers to pass from Vienna the ancient western border of the Ottaman empire to Ankara and beyond through Anatolia to the central area of modern day Kurdistan which is presently an incorporated part of the Republic of Turkey.
When the road is finished it shall boast several bridges and bypasses alowing trade and commerce to pass freely through the Balkans Greece and Turkey. The Greeks are very proud of their new road. They didn´t pay for it but refer to it often as "our road". This is one road at least in a country with a long long memory that does not point to Rome.

It has been confirmed in the last hour that all member states of the European Union will attend a conference in answer to a charming letter which has circulated the movers and shakers of this continent for a while. The finished and embossed version has borne the seals of the Republic of France and the Federal Republic of Germany and been posted by the Greek prime minister. These two states are well known so I wont bore you with details of their history.
Greece though is slightly different.

Greece is a Republic. Its former kings and queens left a while ago. They were easy to spot like most kings and queens. (They have the same features as most of us but somehow look slightly mishapen. The Bourbons have noses the Greeks had ears). Anyway during the last War the last big European war, not the last balkan War, few of those, Britain supported both sides of the Greek partisans fighting the NAZI invador. This is most splendidly described in the award winning novel "Captain Corelli´s Mandolin". So go read a book. Greece is a member of NATO and the EU. You cannot find 500€ notes in Greece that easily because they were not circulated. The people are very "poor". Well they are "poor" by EU standards.

Q. Do the Greeks like the Americans?
A. oh yes. The Greeks recognise a special relationship that has passed through many significant stages between the two countries not least becuase of the presence of many immigrants in the USA of its extraction.
[you can cut and paste that bit because it is the same for all European countries].

Q. Do the Greeks like the British?
A. The greeks have very good relationship with the British Hun on occasion yes, they were suitable grateful for the gold which was parachuted on them at the end of WW2, which for them was the "5th balkan war". Find a greek today and they will say "hurray for lord byron, the british museum is safe and Philip is a good father figure". [do you get my satire or am I too stoned this week?]

Q. What are current political conditions as regards the eternal struggle between classes that as a real anarchist you would foment and uphold instead of writing silly shite about Republics as if they ever did any one any good?
A. oooops. Ok the situation in Greece is ok. It is not very good but nor is it very vad. It didn´t warrent me moving there for the EU presidency put it that way. But there have been serious concerns in the past year at the direction of anti-terrorist legislation and anti-trade union statements made by key government officials.

Q. do you have any details or is this another wild unfounded accusation?
A. http://ireland.indymedia.org/cgi-bin/newswire.cgi?id=18147
now that is a long article. And hardly anyone read it carefully. That happens on the internet with long pieces. Text is different in this format. So I will draw your attention to the paragraphs headed by these words "modern barbarism". You may like to make use of the search function on your computer. Now the two comments were left by me. You may like to consider them. But I would prefer if you gave the sticky mussaka second glance later and stick with this text for now.

Q. who is speaking for the Greeks today?
A. Mr Protopapas.

Q. the Dr. Protopapas who wrote the ground breaking thesis “Perspectives on syllables, stress, and interactions in speech perception: experimental and connectionist approaches.”
for Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA?
A. no. the minister for foreign affairs.

Q. what he say then?

Q. what that all mean in English?
A. British or American English?

Q. British first then American.
A. Well it means a weekend in Athens for the EU heads of state club, they wont be playing at Marseilles at the Teknovalle and they will probably be out of mischief for a while, for the british it might mean a Guardian supplement filler article on the "marbles, is it time to give them back?", and for the Telegraph some sort of balkan appropriate obituary. For the Americans this is what is called euphimistically "shit creek". But they do still have a paddle.

Q. why haven´t you done the Classical allusion bit in a while?
A. One can not please everyone all the time but I have thought to make allusions to the times when in the past Caesar´s legions have been concentrated in Anatolia.

Q. ah you pseud! caught you out at last, it wasn´t called Anatolia then, it was called Anatolia for a reason....
A. yes. you really are very clever you know.
When Ceasar´s legions are in Anatolia they are generally thought to be very far from home that is quite correct, but the new motorway will reduce transit time excellently.

Q. How many soldiers are in the USA?
A. a lot less than usual.

Q. is that why orange alert?
A. oh dear. to admit that would be akin to Suez.

Q. are you playing at Marseille?
A. no.

after J18 the kicking french crew of the south will draw on DJs from both sides of the Pyrennes and Alps to party and toxicify for a while.
There are other gigs happening near you for details go to http://karnaval2003.fr.st/
