Shannon Catholic Worker Action Update

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday February 03, 2003 12:47author by Eamonn Crudden Report this post to the editors

I just spoke to Conor Cregan - one of the people involved with the Peace Camp at Shannon Airport.

I just spoke to Conor Cregan - one of the people involved with the Peace Camp at Shannon Airport. He told me he had visited and spoken to Ciaron O'Reilly in Shannon Garda Station at around 10.30 today. Hre told me that Ciaron said the plane had been 'Totalled'. They entered the Hanger by pushing through a window. They then made their shrine and used mallets to mash up the plane. The plane in question according to Ciaron was the same plane as Mary Kelly hit with a hatchet in the recent past. They then prayed together.

Ciaron confirmed to Conor that thy had indeed met met a Guard who, rather than being overpowered, had had a kind of stress/panic reaction to their presence and had become upset. He was concerned with his job and the consequences of their presence for his Job and with the reaction of his superiors. Ciaran made it clear to Conor that at no point had they approached or attacked or restrained the Guard and that he was their arresting officer. Indeed Ciaran is reported as having said that the five protesters were themselves upset by the Guards reaction and had attempted to comfort and reassure him.

'Ciaran Believes that the gaurds at tomb of the ressurection would have taken a stress attack also' - stated Conor during my phone call to him. he also stated that they had not entered the plane and that Ciaran had said they were being well treated by the Gardai.

The Men are 9in Shjannon Garda Station and the Women are being held at Ennis Garda Station at present. They are not in Limerick prison as has been stated in some reports.

So now we know what happend with the cop being 'restrained'.

1. Cops falls asleep or busy chatting to mates over coffee

2. Activists enter hanger and proceed to 'total' plane.

3. Cop wakes up/arrives back and goes 'shit I'll be in trouble for not stopping this/calling help'

4. Cop thinks 'aha, I'll claim they assaulted me' the standard tactic as anyone who have ever spent a bit of time in the district court will know.

author by Paulpublication date Mon Feb 03, 2003 13:03author address author phone Report this post to the editors

If you're a civilian a cop can push you, drag you along the ground, kick you, punch you, anything so long as it doesn't leave a mark.

If you're a cop all a civilian has to do is put a finger on any part of your uniform or body and you can do him/her for assault. The court will ALWAYS take the cops word (unless the civilian is lucky enough to have Indymedia video footage / photos).

...I don't think he thinks in any way he is Christ .. He does seem determined to take heed of the biblical advice to 'hammer swords into ploughshares'. His quote probably is a religous reference that us seculaised Catholics here in Erron are not wide to.

there are instructions within.
follow them.
meanwhile no one gets mail from [email protected] anymore. ok.
Stopping death machines is moral.
Gardai and everyone gets scared by these machines and the atmosphere they carry.
They are evil machines.
designed to kill.
That garda needs some rest and a re-asignment of duty.
His duty is to protect life first.
he has not it appears done anything to not uphold his duty.
And christians are obliged to prevent war.

That prophesy of Isiah (beating swords into ploughshares) has long been used by the irish left. The Starry Plough, the flag of Irish labour, was a reference to it.

Pat is right about Trotskyists they would never have the guts to do something like this. Anarchists do things like this sometimes in other countries.

Thanks to Indymedia, we now have a firm standard of proof in all accusations of crime: if the accused say they didn't do it, they're innocent!

I mean, it's not like they'd ever lie about their actions. So there's no need to perform forensic tests to see if the implements they brought with them to attack the plane were also used to beat the unarmed guard who was protecting the plane.

These brave heroes would never lie..they're simply upholding traditional Irish neutrality. You know, the kind that Ireland had in WWII...where Eamon De Valera couldn't find the time to send the US a telegram of condolence when FDR died, but went in person to the German Embassy in Dublin to offer his sympathies when Hitler decided "fight to the end" meant "shoot yourself before the Russians get in the door of the bunker."

author by Badmanpublication date Tue Feb 04, 2003 10:49author address author phone Report this post to the editors

Well Veritas, it's not so much a proof of innocence as a denial of guilt. However in this context, where the Gardai have already started retracting their story it seems almost certain that the assault story was fabricated. What's more, if you knew the people involved and their particular ideologies, it would be immediately obvious that the assault story is highly implausible. I'm all for beating up cops (especially when they're guarding parts of the war machine) but the Catholic Worker folks aren't into beating anybody up (and wouldn't be much good at it anyway!)

Its time you load of bleeding heart freeloaders shipped out of Shannon. You have finally being seen for what your truley are when you broke in+entered a private building, attacked an unarmed man and dam0aged private property.Your presence in Shannon is not supported by the residents of Shannon of which i am one.No matter how many lies you place in the media ("We had 1500 at Saturdays walk for peace".Bollocks(I saw you pass with Luka +Glen+there wasnt half that number present)("We have the support of the local people"Bollocks you dont. The town commisioners+county councillers dont support you and having being a witness at all your gatherings/riots i have yet to meet a local.) The truth will win out.We shall overcome and be rid of your unruley ilk.Peaceful protesters my arse.Justifible actions!!???!!So if i came up to the camp tonite and started hitting everything in sight including that minging white carvan im completely justified in my actions because for all i know you could have "weapons of mass desctruction"(well you must do cos you have so far managed to do half a million euro worth of damaged.Thats more than the Us+Uk combined in iraq seeing as not a shots being fired yet.) which may(and lets face it)have being used to hurt people(Gardai are human to).If you wouldnt mind terribly to observe the safe cross code when your walking between the camp and the enterance road to the industrial estate. On a few occasions a few of your doped up number half walk in front of my moving vechicle.I cannot wait to see the back of you.You have over stayed your welcome!!!Go hug a tree

I don't want the US airforce in my town. I don't want you there either. You can't even tell a good lie. It has been said by the Gardai themselves that there was no assault. I don't believe that you're from Shannon because we all know what the story is there. Ye're a feckin Dublin liar trying to force us to have a foreign airforce use our town.

Iraq has been bombed since 1991. Constantly. Daily. Does that count as "shots fired"? Are you such a bitter, blind person that you are prepared to ignore all the information that's available to you?

it seems to me that we have some people who are attempting to rise the more conscientious among us this is easy and fun for them it is done to me all the time.be above them refute their pathetic arguments calmly and with facts not insults.and to those wannabee agents provocateurs well congrats you have completely succeeded in showing us that rascism drives you and justice and toleration means nothing to you.if there was something else you were trying to say could you repeat it more clearly please. And to the catholic workers i find you a truly admirable organisation .i am a protestant, this means little to me other then a rare stir of feeling which i suppress quickly.i think that to bring religion into this can be both good and bad i admit at first i was disgusted by your blatant religiousity.nothing against the morals but more the hierarchy and the current uses of organised religion.this alienates people like me who abhorr the pain and suffering that religious wars have caused .however i have realised youre good folk and youre doing good stuff but its totally unnecessary to undermine anarchists or trotskyists who are often pretty good folks too.

wow! i just read the details about the "shannon five"...

i didn't know the US military WAS in shannon. i am not surprised.

as for the actions, well, mashing up a plane does not seem as radical as pouring blood over draft records nor even as wild as pounding on a nuclear warhead.

if that "stuff" is happening here in the US, we in CA don't know about it.

i understand the arguments about private property, the airport, etc. etc, but the US government is so globally intrusive and violent (we think the TRUE axis of evil is bush, rumsfeld, ashcroft and chaney) that perhaps it takes more extreme efforts to get the attention and to make a point

there HAVE been thousands upon thousands of people here in the US who have been protesting since 9/11 and the media rarely covers these events and the anti-war feelings here are grossly under represented

i have been trying for MONTHS to put together a hunger strike and no one seems willing to make the committment...i say this IS a ditch to die in

thank god for ireland
