Blix Report shows no material breach

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday January 27, 2003 18:57author by Graham Caswell - Green Partyauthor email caswell at indigo dot ie Report this post to the editors

'Ireland is less neutral than France and Germany'

The full report from Blix is available at http://www.un.org/Depts/unmovic/Bx27.htm

The statement today by UN arms inspector, Mr Hans Blix, reveals no material breach of Resolution 1441 and cannot be used as an excuse for war against Iraq, according to the Green Party.

Green Party Chairman and Foreign Affairs spokesperson, John Gormley, T.D., said that Mr. Blix's comprehensive statement showed that more time was required for the arms inspectors to carry out their work. He said that if the US and British had specific intelligence on hidden weapons of mass destruction, it was time that they revealed it to the public.

"Mr. Blix was very clear that he had received good co-operation from the Iraqis in relation to visits to various bases. His report clearly shows that there has been no material breach of Resolution 1441 and that any apparent gaps in the Iraqi declaration simply indicate that further time is required for the inspectors to carry out their work. If the American and British Intelligence services have specific information on hidden weapons of mass destruction, it should be revealed to the arms inspectors, first of all, and then to an increasingly sceptical public. If the arms inspectors fail to produce anything
tangible then a war against Iraq cannot be justified. This should be the position of the European Union and it should certainly be the position of the Irish Government."

Mr. Gormley was once again critical of the Irish Government's position. In particular he criticised a statement by the Taoiseach that the Irish Government would continue to allow refuelling of American planes in Shannon.

"The Taoiseach continues to brazenly claim that assisting the American war effort by allowing planes to refuel in Shannon is compatible with Irish neutrality. The Irish Government has been forced to admit that munitions are going through Shannon and have granted permission retrospectively for this, without announcing it publicly. It is apparent now to most people that the promises in relation to neutrality given at the time of the Nice Referendum were entirely bogus, as the Greens claimed. This entire episode has shown that Ireland is even less neutral than countries like France and Germany, who are members of a military alliance."

but blix's report does show the iraqis haven't been fully coperative... take the U2 spyplane for example... they've refused to allow the UN fly the spyplane over iraq... the inspectors should not be hindered in any way by the iraqis... if the iraqis do hinder the inspectors then that's a justification for war...

"While we now have the technical capability to send a U-2 plane placed at our disposal for aerial imagery and for surveillance during inspections and have informed Iraq that we planned to do so, Iraq has refused to guarantee its safety, unless a number of conditions are fulfilled. As these conditions went beyond what is stipulated in resolution 1441 (2002) and what was practiced by UNSCOM and Iraq in the past, we note that Iraq is not so far complying with our request. I hope this attitude will change. "

1. Oil is approaching peak production and the price will soon be rising whatever happens (see http://energycrisis.org/de/lecture.html )

2. America's oil production peaked decades ago and it is becoming more and more dependant on the Middle East. (see http://www.hubbertpeak.com/ )

3. There are 5 Middle east oil producers. Of the three biggest two are part of Bush's 'Axis of Evil' and another supplied 16 of the 19 9/11 hijackers. (See any geography book or map)

4. America is more dependant on oil than any other society on earth.

5. America not only needs to be able to buy poil, it needs to be able to buy oil in US$, because the dollar is falling. (see http://www.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=231238&group=webcast )

6. No evidence of WMD in Iraq has yet been produced. And REAL evidence of WMD in N. Korea doesn't seem to bother the Bush administation.

THE EVIDENCE IS CLEAR: Its about oil!

i aggree it's about oil... but i think this is one of those situations where the right thing for america to do (confront a dictator who has WMD) and the thing which is in aerica's self interest (secure oil supplies) are the same thing...

so yep it is all about the oil...

you're right, no evidence of WMD has been found... but if the iraqis hinder the inspectors (not let them fly the U2 plane) then the inspectors won't be able to find the WMD... so hindering the inspectors should be a justification for war

This was the gameplan all along anyway. To quote Lloyd-George from the 1921 Treaty negotiations... peace on our terms or face "immediate and terrible war". We can safely call it BLIXKRIEG

"Hindering the inspections should be a justification for war." Really? When are we going to war against Bush?

'd' is that your real name? You sound like somebody out of a James Bond novel.

Are you seriously suggesting that not letting a foreign spy-plane fly over your country is a justification for war?

If you are, I suspect we are going to face a whole lot of wars.

In my book, there is no justification for war. Dropping bombs on people from aeroplanes is akin to shooting fish in a barrell. To fool ourselves into thinking that this can ever be justified is insane.

a joke,,,
a ridiculous joke.

what has the Sr-71 not yet seen?
and the Sr-71 makes the U-2 look like the Wright Brothers flier...
and the Iraqis couldn't shoot down a SR-71 on their best day...

and what would an SR-71 see that the US spy satellites couldn't see?

as usual, trying to find any annoying clause simply for the purpose of getting another nation to object, then calling it 'non-co-operation'

really 'd' this is brinkmanship for beginners...
