Is Keir Starmer autistic? His public persona (or lack of), absence of interpersonal skills and obsessively technocratic outlook might lead us to conclude so. But that would be unfair on autistic people, says Steven Tucker.

€100,000 Ferris claims he's entitled to Medical Card

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday December 09, 2002 10:39author by Dave D Report this post to the editors

Ferris 'entitled to medical card'

Sinn Fein TD Martin Ferris has responded to media reports over the weekend that he has a medical card to cover his expenses claiming he's entitled to it.

This is despite the fact that he is alleged to be earning nearly €100,000 annually. He used the card recently to pay for a €30 flu jab.

The claim comes while his party colleague Sean Crowe campaigns for a medical card for a constituent who is 50 cent over the cut off point for the service.

However, Mr. Ferris this evening said that he was technically eligible to hold a medical card.

He says that the relevant authorities in the south west approved his medical card.

The deputy says that because he was employed for many years before being elected, he was then entitled to a medical card for three years when employed.

Political commentator Dave D said last night "sure if the bloke doesn't think twice about smuggling guns to be used in a futile war in which the innocent will inevitably die, he's unlikely to give a toss about screwing the health system for a few bob".

A Sinn Féin spokesperson today described as mischievous and inaccurate, the story which appeared in a Sunday newspaper in relation to Kerry North TD Martin Ferris. Dismissing the story the spokesperson said:

``Deputy Martin Ferris was unemployed for many years and has severe asthma. He holds a medical card until the end of this year on the basis of eligibility and due to his medical condition. He was in contact with the Health Board as recently as last week in relation to the matter and was assured that this remains the case and under no circumstances would he have abused the situation

``Furthermore Deputy Ferris takes home the average industrial wage. A large proportion of his Dáil salary goes towards providing local constituency services and some also goes back to the party.

``Deputy Ferris and his family are deeply upset and angry at the inference being made in that Sunday newspaper today. He has now handed the matter over to his solicitor.''

It looks terrible but he didn't actually break any law. It's also not true to say he brings home 100,000 plus.

One of the reports yesterday said that Ferris was entitled to a Medical Card because he was returning to work after a long term of unemployment. Since everyone in Kerry and beyond knows that Ferris has been a fulltime organiser for Sinn Fein in that county for several years, and wasn't short of a few bob, does that mean that Sinn Fein were paying Martin under the lamp thus avoiding taxes, employer PRSI, etc, not to mention the probability that Martin was dole sponging?

In other words, the health service should be free and universal. Why hasn't anyone said that here?

To be fair, I'm not sure "local enforcer" is regarded as a legitimate job role. It's not
like it's a very marketable skill. I can't see
Martin being taken on as a telephone marketing
operator....

"Hello there, I'm ringing from AXA Insurance; do you have any life insurance?"

"Erm, no, sorry, look, I can't take this call
right now, I'm busy..."

"What? You can't? Well, you'd better, or I'll send the bhoys around to BREAK YOUR FUCKING KNEECAPS! No wait, sorry, wrong script...."

Martin Ferris was unemployed until his election. He was not being paid by Sinn Féin as a full-time Organiser.

A little birdie (a SP fulltimer) told me there was a time when the SP fulltimers got a top up on their dole. Not declared for PAYE or PRSI. (Cos its known as working and claiming)

What's wrong with claiming the dole while you organise politically? What's wrong with getting a medical card by any means you can? What's with the fairy tale of the equitable state, social-democrats?
What next, the revolutionary possibilities inherent in the paying of tax? ù

Yeah! Up the state! Bring it on!

DaveD is obviously a fucking cretin.

There is nothing wrong with Martin Ferris having a medical card, health care should be free to all. The problem with Ferris is that as he stated on RTE today he has applied to join the VHI. Someone who claims to be a "socialist" but believes in private health care, that's the real story not this medical card nonsense.
But then off we shouldn't be surprised considering that Sinn Fein ministers in the Northern Assembly both actively implimented Blair's privatisation plans for the NHS and in Education. Barbre De Cuts and Martin McGuinness have both been enthusiastic supporters of PFI. When Sinn Fein eventually end up in coalition with Fianna Fail they will do the same thing in the South.

Comparisons have been made between Martin Ferris and the Ballinspital moving statue, following his input into the RTE Joe Duffy Show today. Though not normally seen moving, as he is a nocturnal creature, his voice was heard. This is unlike the numerous times this creature of murder and mayhem has kept his mouth shut during his many arrests by the (elected) law enforcement representatives of the common and decent people. Its a pity for himself though, that he spoke at all, as he really showed himself for what he is. A thug and a liar.
