Most of the anti Nice campaigns and especially posters are rubblish

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Sunday October 06, 2002 18:58author by curious cat Report this post to the editors

sp,sf,swp and green campaigns leave a lot to be desired.

With the notable exception of LAN the various left campaigns are colourless and unimaginative. LAN has produced 50,000 leaflets and has got most of them already distributed around the parts of the country where they have people.

I believe that large areas of the country have not even one poster up, even in quiet large towns! So much for the large 'National' parties, who have no trouble getting cars and vans out to bring voters out on election days, can they not send a few of these around the country, and put up posters? Or are they serious about winning Nice now that they have a few TD'S and Dail seats?

AFRI has produced an excellent poster with a straightforward and clear message, but where is the SWP and SP campaigns? either door to door leafleting or posters, are they serious? The SF and green posters are shit and confusing as well, what happened to NO TO NATO NO TO NICE at least that was clearly understood. I hate to say it but Barrett's poster is better than either the green or sf one, this time out.

Also why are most of the left groups not using the corruption issue more? Is it because bertie has something on them? and they are afraid that he will use it against them if they drop their gentlemanly poses and fight dirty. I am aware that this message will either be taken down by Ray or responded to in a way that answers absolutely none of the issues raised above and that muddies the waters, instead of giving some kind of honest explanation, if so I wont bother replying to any such nonsense. I suppose the party hacks will tell me how great their posters and door to door campaigning really is!

If you like unity so much, join up with
Justin sunny Jim,at least his posters have clearly understood messages unlike the bland sf and green ones, who the hell designed then in the first place, he is also leafleting all over the country not just in constituencies where he hopes to win another seat.

just to throw my tupence worth,
I'm sick to my wank of sectarian shit slinging. I think it'd be so much better if we all got together and threw paint bombs at the Burlington Hotel again. At least for a minute moment the left was united and we got some press coverage. And it was nice to see the Swimmers in jail..... Ah only joking comrades.
Any way, I have to have a shower now, i'm covered in shite because of me shite-slinging. As for OK.... QUICK... I HEAR THERE'S A NEW DEBATE ON LEFT EXCHANGE THAT NEEDS YOUR ASSISTANCE... GO OK... GO FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

I agree with some of ok's points. The no side has far more money and slush funds, and the media are terrible partisan as you would expect.

However as for the'facts'
'if we dont knock on your door doesn't mean we are not canvassing'
Well I know a lot of people all over Dublin and none of them had their door knocked on by the SP during Nice 1 or 2 so far!

Fairer point that the SP has a 'lack of cash for posters' This criticism could be levelled more at SF and the Greens who get a lot of money now in expenses and their posters are rubbish and boring and not a patch on the AFRI poster.

The fact is that the Pro-Nice side and Barrett's No side have lots of money!! FF-FG-Lab-PD take corporate donations, the IFSC are even putting up their own posters!

I am a member of the Socialist Party and we are campaigning on Nice. I make no apology that we have not got the money of the pro-nice side, we dont accept corporate donations. We are going door to door, if we dont knock on your door doesn't mean we are not canvassing.

There is also the question of the media. This time around they are not giving coverege to the No side. Even the Greens and Sinn Féin are not getting much coverege despite getting more votes in recent election than previous election.

So before you go an condemn the lack of campaigns from left groups maybe you should look into the facts.
Lack of cash for posters, and Lack of media profile doesn't mean we're not doing anything

As a party hack I initially felt obliged to respond but half way through this sentence I actually lost interest in the whole thing. Despite a sever lack of finances we're running a much bigger campaign than last time, far more professional and with the possible exception of the Barrett mob, more people on the ground than any other No organisation. I congratulate LAN on the leafet distribution and on the posters, for a tiny organisation it's a very good accomplishment, but we're very happy with the campaign we're running.

This article is not against editorial policy in any shape or form. If a comment rightly belongs to a previously posted news story, or is just trolling in the style of "SWP sucks" and no further text, then of course there's an issue.

But here, there is an article that actually contains content. The fact that it's critical of any organisation has nothing to do with i.

It's not a "comment", it's a personal article giving a point of view, no different from many other articles here.

Furthermore, if "Magoo" opens his or her eyes (har har), I think youll find Ray has been equally critical of anarchist and socialist postings.
