Justin, is this true? Can anyone else confirm whether this is true??
...it was certainly true at 10am
(from the Indo breaking news)
USI students have occupied the board room in the Department of Education and Science, in Dublin in protest at proposals to re-introduce fees for college students. The protest began at 8.30am when students entered the building and barricaded themselves into the room. Speaking outside the Department, USI President, Colm Jordan said: "This is a rallying call for support to students, their families and all stakeholders in Irish education. We are not taking this drastic action for the sake of revolution, it is the only legitimate action we can take, as we cannot withdraw labour or remove investment. If third level fees were to be re-introduced, there would be dire consequences for Irish education. USI will continue to defend the right of every single person to a free education." Speaking from inside the Department, Noel Hogan, Campaigns Officer, USI said: "This is the first of many direct actions, demonstrations and protests that will directly oppose the barriers to education that Minister Dempsey has imposed since taking up office."
I think the problem is that students have to much time on there hands. If there able to go out on the piss they should be able to pay there fees.
When the students are after finishing there course and get a job who does the 4 years they spend in college benefit .NOt the people who paided for them to go to college.
Luke my Man, would you ever drop the stereotypes and get over your wasted childhood and dreams?
Or are you suffering from the MOPE syndrome?
MOPE = Most Oppressed Person Ever
The fine lads and lassies of Ireland's youth are making great attempts to rise above the muck of Irish politics and society and actually create a better country. And when they do, I'm sure even you will be more than welcome.
A TROLL DO NOT FEED
Widened access within Western Civilisation to university level education was coincidental to the wider social organisational changes of the 1960´s.
Ireland as always pursued a slightly different path.
No-one would ever dare suggest that students are wasting their time and state´s money in keeping the education industry ticking over.
Just ponder a while the great victories for Hyper-capitalism only made possible by increased specialisation, and corporate funded research.
It is all very well to wish to learn.
It is all very well to wish to study.
Ignorance is most definitely one of our main enemies within Western Civilisation.
But I for one think it is about time we looked again at the purpose of universities in our society.
