Watch out! the pensioners will beat us on NICE treaty

category national | miscellaneous | news report author Monday September 09, 2002 16:19author by Watch out the pensioners will beat u on NICE Report this post to the editors

A new opinion poll suggests that the result of the Nice Treaty referendum is too close to predict, with a very high percentage of people saying they do not know how they will vote. The poll, carried out by Millward Brown IMS for the international bank Citigroup, was conducted among a nationwide sample of 1,000 voters and concluded last Thursday. It found that 29% intended to vote Yes, 19% said they would vote No, 9% would not vote and 44% said they did not know how they would vote. With such a high proportion of the sample undecided, the result was considered too close to call. Eighteen per cent of men but just 4% of women were in favour of the Treaty. The age range most strongly in favour of Nice was the over 65s, with 26% saying they would vote Yes.

Suspicion on this one - why are Citigroup doing the opinion poll? Normally it's the media that commissions these sort of things?

Is someone getting worried that the Irish people won't fall into line?

Yes, the ruling elite in our country are very much worried that Nice two will fail, it would help if some degree of unity of the anti Nice organisations was achieved, excluding Barrett and co. of course.

Which makes for a missing 18%, or are 18% of people going to vote yes despite not being in favour of the Treaty?

they are having a meeting in the ifsc on thursday; which will be addressed by mary harney.

don't have time or venue yet.

believe good pie is served in ifsc cafes.

Chekov's on the ball here...

If the population is divided 50/50 between males and females, then if 18% of men (=9% of total population) and 4% of women (=2% of population) are going to vote yes, then only 11% of population are going to vote yes.

Even if the population was 99% male, that'd still be only 18% who would be voting yes according to this report.

The only way this could work is if some large precentage (>18%) of the population do not consider themselves male or female and they all want to vote yes!

If 26% of the group most in favour of the Nice Treaty (the over 65's) are going to vote yes, how can the average percentage of people who are going to vote yes be 29%?
