Irish Teenagers Against War And Capitalism (ITAWAC) launched

Rock Musicians Against the war

Irish Teenagers Against War And Capitalism (ITAWAC) is a newly formed organisation mostly as our name suggests made up of teenagers but also with some younger kids as well. And in great change from most of the middle class yuppie shitheads who bloody clog up this IndyMedia Ireland we're a grassroots working class group in areas such as Sherriff Street, Coolock and Ballymun. We're still trying to tie down our exact positions on a lot of issues but we're gettin there. There is a lot of anger amoung teenagers and kids about the way our society is run that if it's not tapped into by people of our generation will lead to the re-emergence of left wing freedom fighters like the Red Army Faction and the Red Brigades.

BLUR's DAMON ALBARN and ELBOW have teamed up with MASSIVE ATTACK in support of the CND-backed campaign aimed at opposing war in Iraq. All have spoken exclusively to NME.COM about their decision to join the 'Stop The War' campaign, which intends to show their opposition to proposed British involvement in the prospective US military campaign aimed out driving out leader Saddam Hussein.

Albarn told NME.COM that his decision to be involved comes from years of support for CND. "I've been working with 3-D from the last part of last year," he said. "There has to be public debate about this. I want to get the message across to my country's elected government. We need a democratic discussion about the rights and wrongs of going to war. There isn't any kind of consensus. I've been a supporter of CND since I was a kid, my father and grandfather were consciences objectors. It's very clear where my line is coming from. It's something very consistent thoughout my entire life."

Albarn continued: "I'm not having a go at anybody else's Government, I'm talking and focusing in on my own, and we should have a discussion."

Massive Attack have been raising awareness of the campaign via their official website. Robert '3-D' Del Naja called NME last week to explain his actions.

"I'm continually passionate on the anti-war subject because I don't think war or violence is an answer to anything," he said. "We've been involved with the Red Cross and CND for the last few years. We got in touch with the Stop The War organisation and the CND who both together are creating a demonstration on September 28 in London, and putting together a petition to hand to Parliament or the Labour Party conference. So we felt we'd add our names to it. It's a list of supporters from all walks of life - religious leaders, academics, scientists, politicians, artists, writers."

3-D feels that as a British citizen he doesn't know enough about what the US campaign is about. "If it's about a change in regime, if it's really about weapons of mass destruction, we never get to know. Ten years ago this happened and no good came of it at all. I don't believe this is the right way forward. The Middle East is unstable. That's my personal view.

"Where does it end? Is he (George Bush) going to go through the whole 'Axis Of Evil' until they secure power or regime changes which they feel are adequate to stabilise the global economy? It's all so vague, nobody really knows what's going on."

Just before going to press, Elbow's Guy Garvey spoke to NME.COM, saying he planned to get involved. He said: "The pressure needs to be put on Tony Blair. He needs to know he won't be elected again if he keeps doing this. People have to realise innocent people are dying in their name."

The bands are urging readers to add their names to the petition, which can be found here, or get involved in the London demonstration, which they plan to attend.

The Stop The War coalition supported by CND demonstration starts on September 28 at 12.30pm at Embankment, ending in Hyde Park. Speakers from National Unions and MPs will be present.

CND are now working with bands to organise a number of adverts which they hope to place in youth publications, including NME, opposing the war in Iraq. Albarn and 3-D are in the process of contacting other bands and artists who they hope will support the campaign.

Is this yet another SWP cover group?
Sounds a bit like one to me especially considering their disaster with 'Revolutionary Youth'

Alright Angry Activist and Cork Teen you'se needn't worry this isn't an SWP/Globalise Resistance/Anarchist/Workers Party/Sinn Fein or any of these groupss fronts. Yeah some of our members who would have connections with some of these groups but in the main we're political without being party political. We're warning anybody or any organisation not to try and take us over. We won't let you away with it. In addition to being Anti capitalist and Anti war we're also very Pro environment and we also want to see other policies implemented for us Teenagers such as Gay Rights and Abortion Rights and protection for those of us Teenagers in these positions that the left parties seem to have ignored. Unfortunately because we're only newly formed we don't have any contact numbers or Email addresses or a Website yet, but as soon as we got these up and running we will post them up here.

First of all I would just like to object to people saying that Anarchists are a group. Most Anarchistsin Ireland are unaligned and saying that you don't want to get involved in in a broad based anti-capitalist organisation because has anarchist in it is like saying you don't want to get involved because it has leninists and republicans in it.

However, this does sound like an interesting project and I would be in getting involved. A while back, I was thinking of setting something loose like this up with a few friends of mine and basing it around bray. But well, I did 'cos setting up an organisation out here with 4 or 5 fairly apathetic friends would have been to much work for me plus at the time I was only begining to get involved politically so I didn't really have the know how, (on top of that pubs tend to be very reluctant to give rooms to youth organisations so holding meetings became a challenge that I that just killed my motivation at the time).

However, now, that you lads are getting something going I'd be very interested in helping out nad maybe I could give this Bray thing a 2nd shot.

Anyway I'd appreciate it if you could e-mail me. And maybe you could go into a bit more detail on what your planning and how many people are involved etc.

It's good to hear guy's that you are interested in the problems facing our society, however you should not have any illusions in ultra left factions such as the red brigades or baader meinhof who had the same degree of connection to the working class as Tony O'Reilly.

yes youse are absolutely correct, keep well away from political parties who are full of hacks misfits and crazies, especially the trotskyist ones who are completely ga ga. The only political figure I would rate differently would be Che Guevarra, who is dead unfortunately, unlike those other mouths

Thanks for all the cool comments. Its deadly to know that there is a layer of support out there. Ois we have 17 heads who are really definite on this and about 30 to 40 other heads who have expressed an interest and who may join up with us. Before ye get too excited though just bear in mind that we're spread around a number of different areas in Dublin like the Inner City, Coolock and Ballymun. Anyway we have to go now. Most of us don't have pcs at home so we relying on sneaking into the libraries when they're open or using the net cafes. A lot of us goin to Slane 2moro (yeah :-) for the music and the craic.
