Farmers Against Foxhunting and Trespass (FAFT), representing thousands of farmers all over Ireland concerned about the havoc wrought by hunts on our land (ripping up crops, scattering livestock, knocking fences, tearing domestic pets asunder in farmyards) wish it to be known that we wholeheartedly support Minister Gormley's inclusion of hunt kennels in the proposed puppy farms legislation. The report launched today is the result of an investigation into the reality of abortion in Ireland, which was carried out in 2009. The report examines the real effects of Ireland's restrictive and often unclear abortion laws on women in crisis pregnancy and highlights the increased burdens placed on women forced to leave the state to access medical care. Commenting, Spokesperson Sinead Ahern said “In the 27 years since the 8th amendment we have criminalised and stigmatised women in crisis. We have not stopped abortion happening; we have simply driven it abroad or underground. It is time that we discuss the issue of abortion in Ireland in terms of the reality and not geography. Last weekend saw a protest in Newry in support of the besieged people of Gaza. The protest took place at a number of venues around Newry outside shopping and market areas. “Little more than a year ago the Army of the state of Israel invaded the small area of Gaza and killed over 1400 men women and children. They have been surrounded since and under siege, unable to leave. They have had to resort to tunnelling into Egypt and smuggling basic food stuffs and medicines. “We the undersigned 50 Primary school principals condemn and refuse to partake in the Irish Independent’s “Building for the Future” scheme being launched this week. We abhor the quota of 20 tokens per pupil from Independent Newspapers required of all schools wishing to submit a project for this sponsored competition. Independent Newspapers while posturing as benefactors are, in reality, seeking to exploit schools, boost sales and make life uncomfortable for children whose parents do not buy the sponsors newspapers.
