Raymond Crotty's intellectual significance was recognised outside of Ireland as is evidenced by extracts from reviews of his last book, When Histories Collide, 2001, by Professor Charles Tilly, historian and sociologist, University of Columbia, New York: "Raymond Crotty has the knack of seeing form the ground up processes that others have viewed from the top down. He had the agronomic and comparative experience to recognize what he was seeing. The result is a fresh, challenging, at times astonishing set of insights into relations between agriculture and civilization." 'Ireland in Crisis, Radical Alternatives', Lecture by Professor Lars Mjøset, University of Oslo, Norway in memory of Raymond Crotty. Butler House, 16 Patrick Street, Kilkenny, 15th October, 7.30 p.m. and Ireland Institute, 27 Pearse Street, Dublin, 16th October at 3.00 p.m. Both lectures are organised by the People's Movement. ... read full story / add a comment

The Ireland-Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) today welcomed the government’s refusal to grant Israel Military Industries the contract to supply 10 million bullets to the Irish Defence Forces. The contract for the 5.56 x 45mm rounds, to be bought over a five-year period, has instead gone to Belgian and Brazilian arms manufacturers. Over the past seven months the IPSC had been running a campaign (http://www.ipsc.ie/bullets) against the granting of the contract to any Israeli company, which saw the organisation and its supporters lobbied the government, undertook a letter writing campaign and protested outside the Defence Minister Tony Killeen’s constituency office in Co. The path to Irish unity does not exist on the pages of the Good Friday Agreement, in fact it is filled with myths and illusions foisted upon Republicans for 12 years. The case can only be described as an attempt by British securocrats to put the Good Friday Agreement on trial through the Diplock Courts. Former Loyalist combatants have given evidence to this effect exposing the case as anti-peace process. They stated that the British government through Mo Mowlam gave a verbal guarantee on a number of occasions that no republican or loyalist would face legal proceedings for offences pre 1998. ... read full story / add a comment |
