Background: The Free Aceh Movement (GAM) has been fighting for independence in the oil- and gas-rich Aceh province of Indonesia since 1976. Thousands of innocent civilians have died in the intervening years, many of them killed by Indonesian soldiers and paramilitaries hired by local and Western oil firms to protect their pipelines and factories in Aceh.
