Right to a Home Campaign

Nearly 6,000 homeless people feel nobody in power is listening to them. Three years into a Government strategy to tackle the problem it continues to get worse - Especially for families who are homeless. The official number of homeless people has increased from 5,234 to 5,581 since 1999. Meanwhile a record total of 48,413 households are stuck on housing waiting lists - That’s about 140,000 people in total.

Focus Ireland’s Right to a Home campaign is calling for urgent Government action to tackle this growing crisis. You can add your voice to this campaign by visiting: http://www.focusireland.org taking a minute to read our campaign demands and then issue the letter to all you local TD's at the touch of a button.

The Irish Penal Reform Trust has questioned why Justice Minister McDowell is privatising the prisoner escort service when a report produced by his own Department found that “privatisation of prisoner escorts is not a viable option”. The IPRT further asked on what basis the Minister has made this decision when he himself admits, “no detailed research was undertaken into the experience of privatised prisoner transport in other jurisdictions.” ... read full story / add a comment

Despite the shocking history of East Timor and the unncessary massacres that the world's powers facilitated and watched, it's all happening again. Indonesia has brought over 11,000 troops to West Papua (its colony since 1969) in recent months and intimidation, torture and massacres are becoming increasingly common. The official Irish government stance is to respect the sovereignty of Indonesia and hope that dialogue between Indonesia and Papuan 'separatists' can resolve the inevitable turmoil. Ridiculous! ... read full story / add a comment
