We cry out for a church that speaks without fear of consequences, including loss of revenues. We understand that we live in a time of great fear and peril. We need to remind ourselves that we are not to fear those that can kill the body, but instead to fear those that can kill the soul. Our domestic and foreign policies have left us a nation without a soul. We call on our Church to be a prophetic voice, a sanctuary, and a source of encouragement to those who want to work together in community towards peace and justice. ... read full story / add a comment

Responsibility for domestic pet animals does not lie within the sphere of responsibility of any Government department. Senator Jim Higgins raised the issue with the Minister for Agricultue and Food, Deputy Mary Coughlan at the request of Anvil Ireland. In her letter to Senator Higgins Minister Coughlan states " The position as regards my Department is that its statutory responsibility relates only to the welfare and protection of farmed animals and does not extend to animals kept as pets. I understand that the matter of ratification of the European Convention for the Protection of Pets and the responsibility of Departments is under consideration". I have tabled a question to the European Commission pointing out that as of now no Irish Government Department has responsibility for pets and urging the Commission to insist that responsibility he assigned to a particular Department without further delay. ... read full story / add a comment

The future of forestry in Ireland will be affected by the National Forest Standard being put together by the Irish Forest Certification Initiative (IFCI) steering group that is now at the stage of third and final draft. Big forestry concerns are trying to push through a weak standard so that they can easily get their Forest Stewardship Certification with little regard for social and environmental factors (e.g. pollution of water courses, landslides such as at Derrybrien, native trees and biodiversity, landscape character). Consultation with the public has been limited due to lack of information and advertising of meetings. If a weak standard is accepted, then we can expect more of the same Sitka Spruce plantations raping our natural environment for years to come - and more of Coillte's selling off of state lands in their control to make up for the lack of profitability from Sitka Spruce - and more pollution and landslides. ... read full story / add a comment

RTE breach their opinion poll guidelines and fail to publish a key poll finding Shell to Sea deplores the selective and biased account in today’s Irish Independent of the RedC opinion poll. There is an inaccurate and disgraceful manipulation of the opinion poll findings. This represents a new low in media misrepresentation of the issues. It appears that RTE has breached its own guidelines on conducting opinion polls. Particular care must be taken when joint polls with other organisations are planned. If for example the costs of a poll are shared with a newspaper, programme makers must be aware that the same constraints of impartiality do not apply to newspapers as apply to RT and that the high-lighting of particular data in the newspapers may reflect on the impartiality of RTE … Programme-makers must be wary of the possibility of data from polling and its interpretation being used in a partisan or propagandist way (RTE Guidelines) ... read full story / add a comment
