As UN talks on tackling climate change get underway today in Nairobi, Kenya, Friends of the Earth is calling for leglislation to ensure Ireland does its fair share to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The environmental pressure group wants the Oireachtas to pass a Climate Security Act mandating 3% year-on-year cuts in emissions and establishing an independent body to monitor progress. ... read full story / add a comment

Press Release

Issued by Irish Forestry Contractors’ Association (IFCA)

The importing of a boat load of wood pulp from Scotland via Waterford Port on the week ending Saturday 23rd, October, 2006 by Coillte has caused consternation among members of the Irish Forestry Contractors’ Association. The wood pulp was imported by Coillte for use in the production of OSB board timber product in its timber mill in Belview, Waterford. IFCA is a stakeholder in the Irish forestry sector and it was not consulted prior to the making of the decision to import the boat load of wood pulp in Waterford Port. IFCA is concerned about the prospects of contamination of native Irish timber products, which is a distinct possibility as a consequence of importing wood pulp. ... read full story / add a comment
national / worker & community struggles and protests Thursday November 02, 2006 - 20:32 by Paul Kinsella
The Executive of my Union, the Civil & Public Service Union (CPSU), at their Monthly Meeting held today, Thursday, November 2nd has fully backed the nurses' rally on 22nd November and are calling on all their members to support this protest. The CPSU will be issuing a Circular to all members in the next few days calling on all CPSU members to take part in the nurses’ protest. However, great as it is that the CPSU are mobilising all their members to support the nurses’ rally on November 22nd, we really need to get the rest of the Trade Union leaders up off their backsides. Now that the CPSU Executive will be officially supporting the nurses’ rally on 22nd November, this will put further pressure on the Executive of the Dublin Council of Trade Unions (DCTU) to officially support the nurses’ rally, and to organise a mass mobilisation of workers, similar to, if not bigger than the Irish Ferries ‘Day of Protest’ last December, and they will get the numbers as health is an emotive issue for many people! ... read full story / add a comment

On Thursday the 27th October, the Jordanstown Órga Shinn Féin society held a
protest against the British army at the careers and placement convention.

This protest was to oppose the presence of the British army at this event but also to highlight the hypocrisy of the University of Ulster to allow the British army to promote, and recruit potential students yet refusing political parties or societies to even distribute leaflets to fellow students during the Fresher’s Fayre.

Ógra Shinn Fein mobilised in Dublin on Saturday to demand a public health system that delivers on the basis of need and not ability to pay.

They were also there to push their demands on an All-Ireland approach to Suicide Prevention and carried banners highlighting the issue.

Many activists also dressed up as patients on waiting trolleys, and one brave male Ógra even donned a dress, wig and make-up to enact Mary Harney. (Although he didn't get many kisses!)

Sinn Féin Councillor Maeve McLaughlin has accused the University of Ulster of double standards after it emerged that the British Army and Royal Navy are to attend a careers fair on Magee Campus while political parties were banned from fresher’s day recently.

Councillor McLaughlin said,

“At the recent freshers day political parties were not allowed to have leaflet, elected representatives or emblems present. The reason given for this by the Pro Vice Chancellor was that they wanted to create a neutral political environment on the campus.

“The attendance of the British Army at a career fair in a city that has seen such outrages as Bloody Sunday carried out by elements within that army does not in any way lend to the creation of a neutral political environment.
