This morning the Lisbon Campaign for Middle East Justice and Peace sent the following letter to An Taoiseach Mr. Brian Cowen T.D., the Minster for Foreign Affairs, Mr. Michael Martin T.D., leading European Officials and all Irish MEP's to convey our reasons for campaigning for a NO vote in the Treaty of Lisbon referendum. Despite the fact that Israel killed 58 Palestinian children since the start of 2008 (Palestinian Centre for Human Rights) EU foreign ministers yesterday agreed to strengthen ties with Israel. The EU policy of rewarding Israel, the aggressor, has caused the Irish electorate to loose confidence in the EU's competence to espouse a foreign policy which represents the views of most Irish people, especially in regard to the Israel/Palestine conflict. ... read full story / add a comment

Nearly seventy seven thousand voters in the South East Counties of Carlow, Kilkenny, Wexford and Waterford voted No in last Thursday’s Referendum on the Lisbon Treaty. Just over sixty seven thousand voted Yes. Yet already a process is under way to try to overturn the democratically expressed majority will of the people of this region and of the rest of the State. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish Socialist Network welcomes the decision of the Irish people to reject the Lisbon Treaty – a document that would have promoted the militarisation of the EU, entrenched Thatcherite principles in European law, and further undermined democracy. After this result, the Lisbon Treaty should be dead and buried. No re-hashed, re-packaged version of the same document should be foisted on the people of Europe. No means no. ... read full story / add a comment

It has indeed been a Friday the 13th the yes campaigners would rather forget. A resounding No! 2 Lisbon was the result, with a comfortable 110,000 votes ahead and a margin of 53.4% to 46.6%. A considerable achievement considering the profile of those calling on support for the Lisbon Treaty. Sinn Féin was the only major party to call for a No! vote. Sinn Féin and their youth wing Ógra Shinn Féin have continuously said that a better deal could be negotiated for Ireland in Europe, and as a result have campaigned and canvassed for a no vote. ... read full story / add a comment

Foreign Minister Michael Martin and other Irish Euro-federalists are already planning to subvert the Lisbon Treaty referendum result by urging the other EU States to continue with their ratification process instead of telling them that Ireland cannot ratify the Lisbon Treaty as it stands, and that further ratifications elsewhere are therefore pointless, and the Treaty must be reopened. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish people have spoken. Contrary to the predictions of social and political turmoil, we believe that hundreds of millions of people across Europe will welcome the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty. The proposals to further reduce democracy, to militarise the EU and to let private business take over public services have been rejected. Lisbon is dead. Along with the EU Constitution from which it came, it should now be buried. ... read full story / add a comment

The new National Electrical Contractors Ireland (NECI) have been shocked by the level of company's who are operating in the industry and know little or nothing about the Registered Employment Agreement. Iris Robinson of the DUP has, today, claimed that people of a homosexual orientation should seek help from psychiatrists in order to be "turned around" referring to their sexuality. It is unbelievable that a member of an assembly responsible for the lives of others can come out and make these sorts of ignorant comments putting people's lives and well being in jeopardy. Shocked by the homophobic and ignorant comments, the Starry Plough Initiative wishes to make a statement... ... read full story / add a comment |
