A controvercial exhibition starting tomorrow alerted the public to call AFAR when a photo of a live Greyhound wired up to act as a 'live medical device' was publicised. people feared the dog was to be confined to a plinth to display this possible future scenario at Dublins science Gallery for the next two months. We contacted the organisers and have been assured that no live dog will be used. It was just for the photoshot. However we urge people to express their strong opposition to the use of animals as medical devices or for experimentation. The expo facilitates and provides for comments to be displayed during this event. A letter from the organisers follows. We in AFAR are glad that they are not using a dog in this instance. ... read full story / add a comment

The Green Party has lost it's mandate to represent the people of Ireland, and in particular, the environmental movement in Ireland. The latest scandal involves Gormley's own promises as Minister, to strengthen legal protections for national monuments and landscapes. In 2007 he promised new legislation the following year. Then it was promised for 2009, and formally described as The National Monuments (Amendment) Act 2009. Last week we informed by the Taniste that the bill will now not be published until 2010, at least. This is a core Green Party issue, and there is simply no excuse for the delay, which is costing Ireland's heritage dearly because of the high destruction rate continuing under the Green watch. TaraWatch is calling on all environmental groups to protest at the Green Party Special Convention on Saturday 10 October at 9.00am. ... read full story / add a comment
PRESS RELEASE - 30th September 2009 There has been a formal call for the OSCE to oversee the Irish Lisbon referendum amid growing concerns that the result of the Irish referendum may be manipulated by postal vote fraud. A source within the Dublin City Council has informed the former MEP candidate Fiachra Ó Luain of efforts by the head of the Franchise department to actively register residents of retirement homes, prisons and even the army. The source has said that the head of the Franchise department has unsupervised and unregulated access to the postal votes and suggests that there may be concerted efforts to influence the outcome of the Lisbon referendum by manipulation of the postal vote system. This corroborates the fact that the ‘People’s Movement’, who are calling for a No vote, received notice from various county councils of the issue of postal votes the day after they had been sent out. ... read full story / add a comment
