Ógra Shinn Féin notes with disappointment the acceptance of the Towards 2016 partnership agreement by ICTU yesterday. We feel that this agreement, and indeed the very concept of the social partnership model, fails young people. It will only serve to weaken unions, leading to the ability of unscrupulous employers to exploit young workers. ... read full story / add a comment

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Two of the Pitstop Ploughshares, sensationally acquitted by a Dublin jury, will discuss their campaign to "demilitarise" Shannon Airport at a public meeting in Dublin city centre on Thursday evening. Deirdre Clancy and Ciaron O'Reilly, along with three others, were found not guilty of criminal damage in a unanimous verdict six weeks ago, despite their proud admission that they "disarmed" a US Navy jet in February 2003. This is their first public meeting in Dublin since that trial. Shortly after the trial O'Reilly said the group's next step would be to demand that the Government remove the US military from Shannon – or he and other activists would take "non-violent direct action" to close the airport. ... read full story / add a comment

Oxford University's records show that in 2003, the Vodafone Group Foundation gave £184,494.14 to the university. At SPEAK we are keen to acknowledge the good work of the Vodafone Foundation, but feel its equally important to point out a fundamental flaw in their strategy. How can a charity give money to worthwhile causes around the world, whilst at the same time giving a substantial amount to an institution that is involved in the abuse and destruction of thousands of innocent non human animals, and an institution that employs as part of its workforce an individual who has been investigated by the police for horrific cruelty to a monkey? ... read full story / add a comment

Supporters of the Shell to Sea campaign have decided not to mount a protest at today’s meeting in Westport of the Fianna Fail parliamentary party. To do so would have been to confer unwarranted attention and respect to the gathering. This is particularly the case when it appears that despite being in Mayo no Fianna Fail minister will visit North Mayo nor have any asked to be briefed on the situation there by the Shell to Sea campaign and local people. Given the ongoing seriousness of the Corrib gas conflict, its effects on the people of Erris and that energy is a theme of the meeting, this failure by Fianna Fail is all the more glaring. ... read full story / add a comment

I. Introduction: This report is not constitutionally required of any non-sabbatical member of the Union Executive. I have compiled as an example of how easy it is to comply with the wishes of those students who proposed the draft Union constitutions of February 2004 and February 2005. These documents both contained the proposal for each member of the Union Executive to produce an end of year report which would include a continuity section to as a written guide of action for their successors. I hope that this report serves a guide or small piece of insight for all those contemplating involvement in an official capacity in the UCD STudents' Union Executive. ... read full story / add a comment
