ANTI-WAR IRELAND WELCOMES REMARKS BY BRITISH ARMY CHIEF OF STAFF

Anti-War Ireland, a national anti-war organisation, welcomes the comments made today in the Daily Mail and on the BBC by British Army Chief of Staff, General Sir Richard Dannett, where he criticised the British military presence in Iraq and urged that Britian should "get ourselves out sometime soon because our presence exacerbates the security problems."

General Dannett's remarks reflect the depth of anti-war sentiment in Britain and across Europe and stand as a remarkable indictment of Blair's war policy by the most senior general in the British army. ... read full story / add a comment

Over the last two weeks the Shell to Sea campaign has been subjected to a coordinated assault designed to de-legitimise and criminalise local opposition to Shell’s project in Mayo. On the one hand, a large force of Gardai has been deployed to facilitate Shell’s resumption of work.

Garda policing of local protests has become increasingly aggressive and is adding to tensions on the ground. Numerous incidents have been logged by monitors and will be pursued in due course. On the other hand, a concerted campaign has been waged by some sections of the media alleging
that our campaign is centred on intimidation and effectively run by
subversive elements. ... read full story / add a comment

It has been confirmed that among the speakers at the Anti-War Ireland (AWI) demonstration at Shannon on Saturday, 28 October, will be three US Iraq War veterans, all of whom served together as interrogators at the infamous Abu-Ghraib prison. The three - who were in the same military battalion - have since completely rejected the war and are members of Iraq Veterans Against the War.

Tony Lagouranis, Joshua Casteel and Stephen Lewis are travelling to Ireland especially for the Shannon demo on 28th October, but will also speak at AWI public meetings both north and south.

For information on Tony Lagouranis, a recent interview can be found at the following link:

Sinn Féin Natural Resources spokesperson Martin Ferris TD has called on people to support solidarity protests against Shell facilities across Ireland in the wake of further clashes and reports of assaults by Gardaí on protestors at the Bellanaboy site. In a strongly worded statement, Deputy Ferris accused Shell of reliance on ‘dodgy polling, brute force and scab labour’ as proof of how isolated their position is and said the company is prepared to ‘lie, cheat and intimidate’ to get its way. ... read full story / add a comment

On Sept. 1st, a lewd comment was left on www.Rate-Your-Solicitor.com about a Dublin based barrister, Jayne Maguire, who rang John Gill, P.R.O. of the Victims of the Legal Profession, to ask him to remove the comment. She explained to him that a male colleague had left this comment about her. When John said that he had no control over the website, Ms Maguire initiated a defamation suit against John through McCann FitzGerald Solicitors, who told John he may face imprisonment if he does not have the offensive material removed as per a High Court injunction issued by Judge Michael Hanna. ... read full story / add a comment
