This is a copy of a letter sent to Women's Activist's Groups re: Reproductive Rights in Poland. At the same time the Nicaraguan Government has voted to ban all abortions on the threat of thirty years imprisonment, after a campaign by the Catholic Church in that country. Standing on a damp road in the predawn morning surrounded by dozens of hostile police officers, it was easy to picture yourself in Ardoyne, Portadown or the Lower Ormeau. As the anticipation built in preparation for the arrival of the unwanted visitors, determined to trundle through the community, it almost felt like the marching season as well. But this wasn’t Dunloy or Bellaghy. Rossport is a small Gaeltacht community in probably the most remote part of Co Mayo. Pope Benedict today professed regret at the Ferns Sexual abuse scandals and solidarity with the victims. This might be the first papal utterance of understanding on the issue of child sexual abuse which tormented a generation of Children. The message was relayed at an Irish Episcopal Conference at the Vatican today. Its a start. It's an acknowledgement of the torment that people went through. It is not an apology or acceptance of responsibility for the handling and covering up of the issue. Pope Benedict was at the head of the council which investigated the issue of Child Sexual Abuse. Speaking during a visit to the area this morning, Mr Sargent said he blamed Mr Dempsey for the ongoing dispute due to his failure to intervene.
