Sinn Féin has been canvassing around the country in support of a No vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty. Even the Pro-Treaty Irish Times has been forced to report that reaction has generally been positive towards the party. Mary Lou McDonald has been especially effective as a canvasser, since people trust her knowledge of Europe and the EU. Of course, as journalists are noting, people in Ireland are very knowledgeable themselves on the Treaty. Other people think the technologically feasible (if near perfecting technique) of altering DNA and brains of animals might not constitute a humane use of science. Eleven anti-hunt protesters have been given a total of £38,300 in damages from Derbyshire Police.The force made the out-of-court settlement after admitting its policing of a demonstration in January 2008 was heavy handed. Lawyers said protesters had been wrongfully arrested and imprisoned after they had peacefully followed the Meynell and South Staffordshire Hunt.
