H.E. Mary Mc Aleese, President of Ireland, an Uachtaran has called [as is her perogative under the constitution (a.k.a. the little blue book)] a meeting of the Council of State to consider and moot the proposals of the Mammy Harney who maybe some day a "Granny Harney"' :- that pensioners of the 2nd richest state in the EU forced to pay 80% of their state pensions to the cost of public nursing homes. (The 2nd richest state in the EU bit is standard PD propaganda and media manipulation). This is reading and optional video material suitable for intermediate and upper intermediate level, standard Irish media accent. Just follow the link and download the national broadcasting networks audio file and watch the Irish TV. This is also educational material suitable for "civics" students and those abroad who are considering living or working in the EU state of Ireland. there may be a test issued later, we're not on holidays yet. ... read full story / add a comment

he British arms firm BAE yesterday refused to comment on documents showing mysterious payments linked to UK weapons purchases by General Augusto Pinochet. Sums of up to $5m (Ł2.57m) are listed in Gen Pinochet's bank records obtained by a Senate investigation in Washington. Some appear to be linked to arms purchases he agreed to make from Royal Ordnance, a BAE subsidiary. http://www.12thharmonic.com/wordpress/index.php?p=548 ... read full story / add a comment

No one expects Mr Bush to weaken his support for a project that has become an article of faith among many Republicans. But analysts said that they expected sceptics in Congress and in the Pentagon to try to whittle down the vast sums being spent on the project, some $10.2bn this year alone. ... read full story / add a comment

by Robert Fisk The Independent [UK] December 15, 2004 Baha Mousa, 26, was working as a hotel receptionist in Basra 14 months ago when British troops surrounded the building and arrested seven men. They were taken to a British base and were reportedly hooded and beaten. Two days later, Mousa was dead. His family was given $3,000 in compensation and rejected a further $5,000. What they wanted was justice. Yesterday, after more than a year of official stonewalling, his relatives won a 'historic' ruling to force the MoD to hold an independent inquiry. Will the truth now be known? ... read full story / add a comment

The model of rule (government in the hands of the few) hasn’t changed since the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt! Eliminating the voice of the people at the community level is a mistake. If community leaders – elected by the people and representing the people at all times – were able to keep our leaders in check and in accord with the wishes of the majority we would prevent government taking a course that nearly half the population oppose. In this way government’s actions would truly reflect the wishes of the majority or be adjusted in a balanced compromise when necessary. To allow a government to rule unchecked for a number of years is the height of folly. ... read full story / add a comment

The observations and re-actions of various ‘experts’ to events in the Ukraine amuse some analysts. Did anyone expect the US not to intervene, do leopards change their spots? Have we all forgotten that the US government is merely a pawn of Corporate Capitalism?
