This summer flooding really came to Europe. Almost 50 died, a very small figure which reflected community awareness and good municipal responses. But all scientific evidence now suggests that these incidents are best to be considered as part of a new pattern related to global climate change.
We are not dealing with the causes in the short-term. We are thus dealing with effects which are long term. Proverbially the time to put that first stitch has passed now.-

We now face forest fires and flooding of the largest river valleys in summer and extreme storms with tornados in spring and summer. ... read full story / add a comment

The report finds that the legal agreements governing the project place a ‘price tag’ on human rights by creating financial disincentives for the governments of Chad and Cameroon to protect human rights. The agreements may require the two countries to pay large financial penalties if they interrupt the operation of the pipeline or oil-fields – even when making an intervention to protect rights and enforce laws that apply elsewhere in their countries. This makes it extremely difficult for Chad and Cameroon to take action against company malpractice, and for individuals adversely affected by the pipeline to obtain redress. ... read full story / add a comment

The evacuation of New Orleans in the face of Hurricane Ivan looked sinisterly like Strom Thurmond's version of the Rapture. See how the fat cats network:
"Alongside O'Leary at this press briefing sat David Bonderman - boss of Texas Pacific, who own Gate Gourmet - and the man O'Leary hopes will bankroll his medieval pillaging of the rest of the airline industry. O'Leary and Bonderman (who, incidentally, is also chairman of Ryanair) are already tied up through their joint interest in Texas Pacific, the venture capital firm which took over Gate in 2003. Bonderman is so loaded that he spent an estimated $7 million on his birthday party - with live music from the Rolling Stones, no less, and a stand-up routine from Robin Williams." ... read full story / add a comment

Hundreds of thousands are left homeless. Tens of thousands have been shipped to Texas as refugees. Buildings have collapsed. Entire communities have been reduced to rubble. The city of New Orleans, one of the centres of history and culture in the US, will likely be uninhabitable for months. The death toll from Katrina is certainly in the hundreds, and it will probably reach the thousands. Some commentators say this was all unavoidable, but that is a lie.
