The headlines above and the report excerpted below appeared on the front page of the Irish Independent today: **** THE Government reacted angrily last night after a leading US academic compared Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to a “shoe-shine boy” for President George Bush. In a scathing attack on the Government’s foreign policy, the influential anti-war academic Noam Chomsky accused Mr Ahern of “shining the shoes” of the US President by allowing US warplanes to use Shannon airport. **** ... read full story / add a comment

With 51.1% of the vote, Evo Morales, coca farmers’ leader and head of the MAS (Movement Towards Socialism) has decisively won the December 18 presidential elections and is set to become Bolivia’s first indigenous president. These elections were yet another sign of the radicalisation and move to the left of the masses of Latin America and represent just the first one of eleven important electoral contests which will take place in different countries across the continent over the next year. ... read full story / add a comment

Time is very special, and no-one really knows who owns it. One thing is clear - we don't. But over the millenia we have seen the state or church whichever was more powerful at that particular time meddle with both calenders and hours. On the 31st of December 2005, an extra second will be added to the world's clocks meaning the year will last 31536001 seconds rather than the usual 3156000. ... read full story / add a comment

Bush is furious that patriot/s who still hold the values and laws of the USA sacrosanct, leaked the story of illegal bugging and surveillance to the media. Ingmar Lee writes a round-up style piece for Counterpunch in which he points out the harsh sentences and scare-mongering publicity directed at eco-activists in the USA and contrasts it with the soft-pedalling of the much more effective Pacifist direct action movement. Ciaron O'Reilly's name appears twice in the list. Tim Hourigan, Mary Kelly, Eoin Dubsky all get a mention too. ... read full story / add a comment

Bush confesses his criminality and hopes that his ‘act’ of contrition will save him from the dock. He has finally acknowledged that the invasion (and occupation) of Iraq was/is based on incorrect information (lies). Supporters and citizens who desperately hope that Bush’s admission demonstrates his contrition had their hopes dashed against the hard reality of further sordid deeds – the illegal 'bugging' and monitoring of US citizen’s private communications by the NSA. [Would anyone seriously expect this criminal administration to change character?] Bush’s admission is a political gesture, a strategic manoeuvre in response to increasing international disapproval of the dishonesty of his regime. ... read full story / add a comment
