sligo / politics / elections Tuesday April 11, 2006 - 21:59 by Pat   text 3 comments (last - friday april 14, 2006 - 13:24)
Internal fighting within the Labour Party in the Sligo-North Leitrim constituency has deepened with the decision of the all the members (23) of the North Leitrim branch not to renew their membership of the party. Former Sligo-Leitrim TD Declan Bree, who comes from the left of the party, has been in sharp conflict with the party leadership. Bree said he regretted the resignation of former county council candidate Gabriel McSharry. Sources in Sligo say Bree is coming under strong pressure from supporters to leave Labour and stand as an independent socialist. Also Bree and several of his supporters did not attend Labour’s annual conference last weekend.

The Alma-Ata City authorities are determined to destroy the homes of settlers who have built poor but dignified living quarters on the outskirts of the city. Many of those who live in Shanyrak were driven out of their last homes by the collapse of industry in Kazakhstan, in the early and mid-nineties. With nowhere else to live, they moved to Shanyrak, and used old and second hand building materials to build modest homes in formerly uninhabited regions of the city. Now the Alma-Ata City authorities want the land, to build ‘entertainment complexes’ and elite flats for Kazakhstan’s ‘new rich’. ... read full story / add a comment

One of the world's best known investigative reporters, Seymour Hersch, is revealing in the next issue of The New Yorker magazine that Bush & co are actively planning a major air attack on Iran and that; one of the military’s initial option plans, as presented to the White House by the Pentagon this winter, calls for the use of a bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the B61-11, against underground nuclear sites. One target is Iran’s main centrifuge plant, at Natanz, nearly two hundred miles south of Tehran.

A sad day for Irish journalism, and also very bad news for the many talented and dedicated staff who worked there.

This article is from the Sunday Times Ireland Edition, and I haven't seen or heard this news anywhere else. Even the CPI's own website doesn't have it. Therefore it's possible that this is nonsense. However the CPI has been under attack since its launch, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have finally decided to give in to the enormous pressure they have been under. ... read full story / add a comment

Hello from Guatemala. I am forwarding the article written by Sandra, she contacted me recently during my stay in Guatemala. If any of you took part of the presentation of the book "Fumigation: the human and environmental costs of chemical warfare in Colombia" last October in Trinity the following article will make sense.
I have seen the mentioned plantations in San Marcos and i believe that the the propossal fumigations here is going to finish with the farmers livelihoods and other plantations. I have been following close the case of the Mining company and there is a great video for anybody in Ireland interested to watch about the consultation propossed by the Indigenous people about the mining.

I thought this article in the Sunday Times was worth a look.

It seems that Christy Loftus, Shell's new hired help in Mayo, is saying that they are going to have to find a new pipeline route. He's getting €58K pper year for stating the obvious there, but he also seems to believe that there actually is a route they can find where the community will accept the danger posed by an experimental high pressure raw-gas pipeline. It looks as though Shell are also paying him to learn Irish, so some good will come of this scheme...

Further on in the article, Maura Harrington wonders about the possibility of someone giving birth at the Rossport Solidarity Camp. ... read full story / add a comment

The Irish independent reports:

" In February a cargo plane carrying three Boeing Apache helicopters, the type used by both the American and Israeli forces, landed at Shannon, where it stayed overnight before taking off for Israel.

When contacted last month both the Department of Transport, which is responsible for foreign civilian flights, and the Department of Foreign Affairs, which is responsible for foreign military flights, denied any knowledge of the flight.

This week, when presented with the serial numbers of the cargo planes and of the helicopters, they conceded the flights had taken place and said that they have launched an inquiry.

Although Shannon airport is routinely used by American planes in support of the ongoing occupation of Iraq, this is the first time it has emerged that Ireland also facilitates the sale of American heavy-arms sales. " ... read full story / add a comment

The very American travelling circus that is tent religion matured and found expression in the mass ‘conversions’ (come on down and be saved style) of Billy Graham, demagogue and showman, the forerunner of today’s Evangelicals. Plastic religion for a plastic society, Graham invented ‘Kentucky fried religion’, a fast consumable product that was accessible to the masses, requiring nothing but gleefully running to the stage and in spectacular fashion being ‘saved’ by Billy or one of his many imitators. Modern Evangelicalism was born, long arduous hours of meditation and prayer in the pursuit of Deity was a thing of the medieval past. ... read full story / add a comment

Anthony McIntyre has stood up for Womens Rifghts and Democratict Rights against the Islamofascists. For doing this, the SWP and their lackeys have called him an Islamophobe. In the article below Anthony profiles Maryam Namazie, an Iranian Socialist Feminist. Maryam shows how backward and reactionary Islam is. How opposing Islam is literally a life or death question for Women in Islamic States.

Maryam says: "Labelling women's rights activists as racists is
a dim-witted ploy to justify and excuse women's
status under Islam and political Islam, and deny
women and people living in the Middle East and
Iran universal rights and freedoms."

Theres an excerpt from the article below. The full article is at the link.
