And figures reveal up to 3,000 soldiers have deserted the British Army since March 2003 amid reports of growing numbers were “questioning the morality and legality of the occupation.” To counteract this, the British parliament -that bastion of democracy - have passed a Bill -Section 8 of the Armed Forces 2006 where those refusing to take part in the military occupation may now be sentenced to life imprisonment. According to the report: The bill directly contravenes principles outlined at the Nuremberg Trials in 1950, which enshrined in law the responsibility of individuals to refuse to obey illegal and immoral orders from any superiors. The Fourth Nuremberg Principle states, “The fact that a person acted pursuant to an order of his government or of a superior does not relieve him of responsibility under international law, providing a moral choice was in fact open to him.” ... read full story / add a comment

It’s not difficult to arrive at an accurate assessment of the present Oz leadership, the government of John Howard. Love Howard or not, he has the local population eating his lies like it was manna from heaven. Howard’s treasurer recently announced that the Oz government was out of debt, in view of a national foreign debt of $493 billion, the highest ever recorded by an astronomical ‘mile’, the announcement of no government debt becomes meaningless double-talk. But which figure does the public prefer to embrace? In the Shadow of 'Success' While in clinical terms the killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi is indeed a success for US and UK occupiers, in that it provides a excellent PR opportunity and at the same time puts an obviously sadistic killer ‘out of the picture’, it will also no doubt prove to be blow to war supporters confidence. Given that al-Zarqawi is neither a military or ideological leader to the large majority of the Iraqi resistance, the violence will no doubt continue unabated. This will obviously despair many of the coalition faithful who would have come to regard the killing of such a prominent terrorist figure as a key moment in ending the resistance. This could be more harm than good for messers Bush and Blair. The mainstream media often comments on the inhumanity of Islamic extremists when they extol the virtues of killing the enemy. Journalists reel in horror as the enemy rejoices in the killing of coalition forces, despite the common occurrence of innocent people dying in the process. This infrequent morality makes the near unanimous celebration by US and UK officials in the aftermath of the killing of al-Zarqawi, and seven others, all the more amazing. The media has made no comment on this reaction. The US Ambassador to Iraq, Zalmay Khalilzad, said al-Zarqawi's death marked a 'great success' and Mr Bush said special forces had 'delivered justice' in killing al-Zarqawi. ... read full story / add a comment

"The welcome and generosity of these men was fantastic, I was put at my ease, made to feel safe, I was now among friends. The regime is hard on the Republican Wing in Maghabery, you alternate between 22 and 20 hour lock ups, on a good day you will get 2 hours exercise in the morning and the evening, on a bad day you will get 2 hours exercise in the afternoon only. You are secured in the rec room with access to the cage at these times; this is the only time that you are allowed anything close to free association. There are for all intensive purposes no opportunities for education, and like wise for craft work. You are allowed some cell association on some days; this is where any thing up to three prisoners are locked in one cell for a couple of hours to converse. In a detailed article in the February issue of Irish Law Times, Declan Costello, the former Attorney General and former President of the High Court claims the Iraqi War is illegal. Terence Wheelock died in suspicious circumstances after being arrested and held in Store Street Garda Station in Dublin last June. The Gardaí maintain that he attempted to take his own life by hanging himself from a light fitting in the cell. Before any proper investigation could be carried out, the cell was completely re-furbished. This included the removal of the light fixture. The family of Terence Wheelock are campaigning for a proper public inquiry into the events surrounding his death. So far, the Department of Justice have agreed to carry out a limited, internal investigation by a senior Garda who spent many years working in Store Street. The family have, however, been subjected to a sustained campaign of intimidation from the Gardaí, including assaults and arrests. Earlier this week, Terence's brother was arrested and taken to Clover Hill high-security prison because of a fine he had not paid in 1988. That's an eighteen-year-old warrant. All reports and profiles of Al-Zarqawi do not place him in the criminal genius category. Murdering thug and street crim maybe, but to evade the limitless resources of western agencies for two long years is out of the question unless of course the situation was managed to keep a population distracted, fearful, and compliant while precious resources were plundered and illegal invasions justified. ... read full story / add a comment

This year will mark the first ever Connolly Festival, taking place in the Teachers Club on Friday 16th and Saturday the 17th of June. The idea of the festival is to organise an event to commemorate James Connolly by looking at issues and campaigns that are relevant today. It is hosted by Labour Youth and the event is open to all left wing activists. It is our hope that the workshops will be informative and interactive with the clear intention of a unified campaign emerging at the end of each session.
