"The welcome and generosity of these men was fantastic, I was put at my ease, made to feel safe, I was now among friends. The regime is hard on the Republican Wing in Maghabery, you alternate between 22 and 20 hour lock ups, on a good day you will get 2 hours exercise in the morning and the evening, on a bad day you will get 2 hours exercise in the afternoon only. You are secured in the rec room with access to the cage at these times; this is the only time that you are allowed anything close to free association. There are for all intensive purposes no opportunities for education, and like wise for craft work. You are allowed some cell association on some days; this is where any thing up to three prisoners are locked in one cell for a couple of hours to converse. In a detailed article in the February issue of Irish Law Times, Declan Costello, the former Attorney General and former President of the High Court claims the Iraqi War is illegal. In the article, Costello backs the assertion made by the UN Secretary General, made in September 2004, that the invasion of Iraq was illegal, saying it "has strong and comprehensive legal arguments to support it". ... read full story / add a comment

Terence Wheelock died in suspicious circumstances after being arrested and held in Store Street Garda Station in Dublin last June. The Gardaí maintain that he attempted to take his own life by hanging himself from a light fitting in the cell. Before any proper investigation could be carried out, the cell was completely re-furbished. This included the removal of the light fixture. The family of Terence Wheelock are campaigning for a proper public inquiry into the events surrounding his death. So far, the Department of Justice have agreed to carry out a limited, internal investigation by a senior Garda who spent many years working in Store Street. The family have, however, been subjected to a sustained campaign of intimidation from the Gardaí, including assaults and arrests. Earlier this week, Terence's brother was arrested and taken to Clover Hill high-security prison because of a fine he had not paid in 1988. That's an eighteen-year-old warrant. All reports and profiles of Al-Zarqawi do not place him in the criminal genius category. This year will mark the first ever Connolly Festival, taking place in the Teachers Club on Friday 16th and Saturday the 17th of June. The idea of the festival is to organise an event to commemorate James Connolly by looking at issues and campaigns that are relevant today. It is hosted by Labour Youth and the event is open to all left wing activists. It is our hope that the workshops will be informative and interactive with the clear intention of a unified campaign emerging at the end of each session. Ken Loach is on a high after winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival. Seeing as RTE 's website today has no story about the body found at Carnmoney Cemetery on Monday , here’s a link from BBC northern Ireland . A mans body was found by a workman with what looked like a knife sticking out of it , but the PSNI do not suspect murder . In a forthcoming BBC documentary Richard O’Rawe once again will be claiming that the republican leadership rejected a deal from the British government shortly before the death of Joe McDonnell on July 8th 1981. Richard is a former blanket man and PRO in the H-Blocks. Whilst in jail Richard never raised his claims with the leadership in prison or the leadership outside. After Richard’s release he worked with me in the Republican Press Centre for a year and never mentioned the allegations he now makes. He neither approached Brendan ‘Bik’ McFarlane, O/C of the prisoners, nor me to ask us our recollections of this period when he was preparing for his book. Last year Richard alleged that in late July 1981 I sat at a meeting with hunger strikers’ families with a deal from the British government in my back pocket and didn’t tell them. When I pointed out that I had been in hospital in Dublin during that period Richard realised his memory was false and discreetly dropped the claim. He claims he wrote the book out of concern for the relatives, yet he never told them. Instead, he published extracts from the book in the ‘Sunday Times’. ... read full story / add a comment
