Jim Moody of the CPGB writes on the likely effects of a ‘pre-emptive’ strike on Irans Natanz fuel enrichment plant. Full text at link. No nuclear explosion, when delivered by bomb or missile, could be contained underground - especially one so large as to ensure complete destruction of Iran’s nuclear facilities within mountain tunnels, as well as its earth and concrete protected structures below ground. This is not akin to an underground nuclear test, where containment can be achieved. ... read full story / add a comment

Twenty years after the then Iranian authorities began a wave of largely secret, summary and mass executions in September 1988, Amnesty International renews its call for those responsible for the “prison massacre” to be held accountable. According to a report delivered to the U.N. General Assembly on January 10, 2008 by the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances (WGEID), there were no reported instances of persons disappeared in Haiti during the year 2007. The WGEID is part of the U.N. High Commission on Human Rights and as such is in the loop to receive regular human rights reports filed by the U.N. mission in Haiti. In today's Evening Herald, columnist Dan White plumbs new depths of idiocy. In a bizarre link, he tries to make out that the conflict in Georgia and South Ossetia should encourage the Irish government to help Shell bring the gas from the Corrib field onshore. What does he think they have been doing? Does the 11 million euro spent on Garda overtime not indicate (even to the slow witted Dan White) that maybe the government is already on Shell's side? read the full column here: http://www.herald.ie/opinion/columnists/dan-white/the-r....html ... read full story / add a comment |
