A very interesting article in the Irish Times today, considering the background to the siting of the giant gas refinery that Shell seek to construct at Beal an Átha Buí (known in English as Ballinaboy, Bellinaboy or Bellanaboy).

The views in the article are worth paying attention to, since the authors are extremely well-qualified to comment on this subject. Leo Corcoran was previously Engineering Manager of Bord Gáis and Brian Coyle is a partner with consulting engineers Coyle Kennedy. Perhaps rather than arguing with people who are not as well qualified to discuss these issues on the comments section of indymedia articles on the continuing occupation of Erris by Shell and their security forces, we should simply refer people to this piece.

2-4 May 2007 . Conference at the University of Albaerta, Edmonton, AB, Canada.

In 1929 Virginia Woolf predicted that women in another century or so if given the opportunity
and rooms of their own, will have the habit of freedom and the courage to write exactly
what we think, seeing human beings in relation to each other and in relation to reality.
Our knowledge based economy and society have made such an opportunity more
tangible for some and more elusive for others. Rooms of their own Considers the
situation of women in and beyond the academy. By heightening awareness , extending
the knowledge base and forming practical recommendations, the conference assesses the
challenges and conditions for women to participate in this new reality. ... read full story / add a comment

The Australian Minister for Communications, Helen Coonan, buoyed by her recent success in eliminating media diversity in Oz is now targeting the most diverse (content) medium on the planet – the internet. Her latest comments (news radio) veil her real intentions (information control!) The only effective means of controlling the flow of information on the internet is filtering at backbone or provider level. Conservatives are entirely predictable and Coonan is no exception, her intentions to target the internet were anticipated, a quote from an article dated July 5, follows: ... read full story / add a comment

national / environment Monday October 23, 2006 - 15:20 by Shell to Sea   image 1 image
Below is the first part of interesting article on a move to try and get some money from Shell and other energy companies to pay some of the cost of the environmental damage they cause (followw the link for the rest).

While the article makes the point that Shell don't pay nearly enough to make up for the damage they are causing in Britain, here in Ireland we should remeber that there is no tax being paid on their huge profits, since all the costs incurred by SEPIL-everything up to and including the legal costs of prosecuting the Rossport Five- are being wriiten off.

Last year the British Finance Minister, Gordon Brown, imposed a windfall tax on the energy companies.

Will Brian Cowan impose a windfall tax on Shell to pay for the extra hospital beds we need? To at least offset the cost of the huge Garda occupation force in Mayo? To invest in sustainable energy sources?

Maybe he's waiting for someone to suggest it- his phone number is: 01-604 5626 ... read full story / add a comment

Rebalancing Criminal Justice-Remarks Made by Tanaiste in Limerick.

The Tanaiste is up-grading the statutes to do away with the Right to Silence, though he asserts that the right to the presumption of innocence and trial by jury will remain.

The Killer in his press release is this Quote:

'Many of the legal principles and values have become the cornerstones of our law and are almost sacrosant in how we perceive and interact with them. Those same principles have originated and developed from a different era when many defendants could not read or write and it was necessary for the legal system to devise means and ways(!) to ensure that safeguards were available'.

China asserts dominance in the region but if you blinked you missed it; the difference between loud and clear and subtle and clear is the difference between, “bombing into the stone-age” and gently applying Asian lateral diplomacy. DPRK (Kim Jong il) rebuffs six-party talks but promises China during independent talks, that nuclear testing will cease. Miss war whore/status quo/dead children, Condoleezza Rice, and the rest of the world are left in no doubt which nation exercises the greater degree of influence in the region; a clear message has been sent – the world has taken note. ... read full story / add a comment
