DEFENCE MINISTER Willie O’Dea was at the centre of another embarrassing gaffe last night after it was claimed he was forced to pull out of the launch of the biography of the famed Limerick IRA man Sean South of Garryowen. The minister, who is also from Limerick, withdrew from the event claiming he did not realise who the book was about when he agreed to do the launch. The biography by Des Fogerty is entitled Sean South of Garryowen. ... read full story / add a comment

John Howard, lackey Prime Minister of Australia and member of the coalition of willing criminals, today stated that he is “horrified“ at the loss of life in Iraq. In view of the fact that Howard, Bush and Blair are DIRECTLY responsible for the illegal invasion and the hundreds of thousands of subsequent deaths in Iraq, we are horrified that these men have avoided prosecution to date! ... read full story / add a comment

Bush has now authorised spying on Alcatel. Alcatel has a large operation in Ireland and if Bush has his way and the NSA has the right to examine all Alcatels' records and keep it under constant surveillance, the calls of Irish mobile phone users will be available to the US. All because Bush claims Alcatel, "might take action that threatens to impair the national security of the United States". ... read full story / add a comment

Foreboding has hit the ranks of private equity firms; try as they might to unload vast amounts of funds (monetary value is inextricably linked to the movement of those funds) they have been unable to spend/invest at a rate that would sustain value let alone increase real profits! THE Erris-based football club, Valley Rovers has sensationally pulled out of this year's FAI Junior Cup. The club officially notified the FAI of its intention to withdraw yesterday (Monday). They described the action as a "boycotting" one taken on the grounds that the high profile knock-out challenge is sponsored by Statoil, who are one of Shell E&P Ireland Ltd's partners in the Corrib gas project in Erris. The Statoil FAI Junior Cup is one of the biggest soccer knock out tournaments in Europe. In an official statement Valley Rovers F.C. said it had been disappointed to see local people from its parish, Kilcommon, being treated in a "heavy handed manner" by Gardaí as they protested at Shell's first attempts to resume work at the terminal site in Bellanaboy. ... read full story / add a comment

This is obviously interesting as a spin on the Shell to Sea campaign, that people shouldn't be interested in it because Sinn Féin support it, and the fact that it chimes in with SF politics should make everyone wary of it. What is also fascinating is the insight into the worldview of the author (and by extension, those who pay him and read him). He believes that if something reminds people of the recent conflict in and about Nothern Ireland, then people in the rest of the country will turn off from it. Not because of the issues, but just because it brings up unhappy associations. Therefore if the police want to diminish public support, they should baton charge the protesters, the author seems to be saying. Perhaps plastic bullets would be the next logical step in Mayo? ... read full story / add a comment

Both FEIC and DAWC were today calling on the council to stand by that commitment, following evidence unearthed by the North West Telegraph that Raytheon had been developing the Joint Effects Tactical Targeting System (JETTS) for the MoD, which aims to improve "lethality". During a meeting, Raytheon bosses confirmed to the council that the revelations in the documents, obtained from Invest NI under the Freedom of Information Act, were true. http://www.belfasttelegraph.co.uk/news/northwest_editio...14803 ... read full story / add a comment

A story in today's Sunday Independent would appear to reveal an attempt to fracture the Shell To Sea campaign. The story focuses attention on Maura Harrington who (among others) can be seen to be assaulted by Gardai in many photos on IMC.ie e.g. http://indymedia.ie/article/79039 Mark Garavan is quoted as criticising some "unnamed person" as being "violent". I wonder what he actually meant and whether Daniel McConnell understand him to be talking about Sgt. Connor O'Reilly or some of the police officers that were responsible for these assaults http://www.indymedia.ie/article/78913#comment170751 early on in the protests? ... read full story / add a comment
