In 2020 Asian countries were praised for their pandemic response. But since 2021 they've seen soaring death rates, while the UK is still running hot. Why did deaths not drop once the 'pandemic' was over, asks Nick Rendell.

Rumours have been rife these last few days that Fidel Castro would make his first appearance since his autistic younger brother Raul took over the reins of power temporarily last 31 july. However, as the Cuban Mayday began to move a few hours ago - neither of the Castro brothers were to be seen.

Instead Salvador Valdés, secretary general of the Central Workers' union of Cuba led the march which Fidel has now missed twice. Raul Castro has never appeared in his official capacity nor been named as such in any broadcast by Havana.

United Press International distributed the story below. The link will presumably disappear when they realise what they've reported is a mish mash of real and imagined stories.

It's interesting to see what they think is believable.

When Bertie shows up in Washington every year, do they have a clear idea of who he is? Do they know where Ireland is?

More importantly, is our news about the rest of the world so unreliable?

(In other news, the President of Scotland announced that the French elections can be cancelled if the Socialist party don't agree to support the bin tax, say sources in Baghdad...) ... read full story / add a comment

Over the last few months, most of the Irish media has been resolutely ignoring the continuing confrontations in Rossport, Co. Mayo. Meanwhile, the world has been waking up to the struggle - with the award of 125,000 euros to Willie Corduff and Al Jazeera sent a film crew to spend several days investigating the matter. Their documentary is due to be screened tonight and for the next three days on Al Jazeera English. ... read full story / add a comment

Council grants injunction against protestors

The High Court has granted an injunction to Limerick County Council against four people who have occupied the county buildings since yesterday afternoon.

Mr Justice Iarfhlaith O'Neill granted the injunction against Donal O'Brien and Kenneth McCarthy from Pallaskenry Co Limerick and Patrick Gleeson and Daniel Foley from Kildimo Co Limerick.

The court was told the four are members of the Bleach Lough Water Retention group and are involved in a long-standing protest against plans by the County Council to change the water supply to the Kildimo/Pallaskenry area.

The case will come before the court again on Friday morning. ... read full story / add a comment

There’s one useful bench-mark for judging the progress of the Bolivarian revolution over the coming years – how much does the role played by Chavez himself diminish, and how rapidly? You can’t assess what’s happened in Venezuela over the last eight years realistically without recognising that Hugo Chavez has played a positive role. But an asset can become a liability, and the commanding position of Chavez could be an obstacle to the emergence of popular democracy in Venezuela. To succeed, the Bolivarian revolution will have to go beyond its dependence on Hugo Chavez.

Howard’s latest glib contribution, ‘Australia Rising’, delivered at the Queensland Media Club today, is yet another attempt to claw back into favour and steal attention away from the Murdoch endorsed future Prime Minister, Kevin (I can suck harder than you) Rudd. Howard’s spin-doctors have been working overtime to no avail it would seem. Following the ridiculous and desperate attempts to steal the agenda with infantile attacks on US presidential candidates, the HIV positive and most recently Howard's very revealing and ‘removed’ call for divine intervention regarding the water crisis, the “Australia Rising” speech will no doubt be greeted by the public with all the disdain it deserves! ... read full story / add a comment
