Things are more and more fucked here in Iceland. Iceland's three main banks have been nationalised and the tax payer now has to pay off the loans. The country is broke and the IMF have been called in and have imposed their usual austerity measures. Unemployment is growing rapidly along with the threat of people losing their homes. Alongside this the population is growing increasingly angry. ... read full story / add a comment

Torab Salehi addressed the agm of HOPI Britain on the continuing threat of Imperialist aggression towards Iran. Here are some extracts from his speech. Full article at link.

What we said and should continue saying is very simple: to build an effective and broad campaign opposing US war against Iran means we should not align ourselves with those who in the name of support for the Iranian people are actually aiding the plans of US imperialism to control and dominate the Middle East. Nor should we align ourselves with those who in the name of anti-imperialism and anti-US militarism, apologise for the Iranian mullahs’ theocratic hold on power. To this day, not one of our critics have given a straight answer as to why this statement is wrong. ... read full story / add a comment

Interesting head to head poll in the Times today- Mary Lou McDonald explains that is the same dinner, warmed up and stuck on a different plate, while Dick Roche tries to tell us that all Irish concerns have been met.

But we didn't vote just as self-interested Irish people Dick, we voted as good Europeans. We want the best for Europe -which doesn't mean writing a blank cheque to the arms industry. ... read full story / add a comment

Supt Joe Gannon, of Pearse Street Garda Station said:

"The difference is the streets are cleared earlier," he says. "When we had the theatre licences one lot were coming out of bars at 2.30am and another lot coming out of the late clubs at 3.30am, so there were people on the streets until about 5am.

"Now they are all coming out together at 2.30am. The fast-food places don't have the capacity for them all, so a lot head straight home.

"If it is staggered, there is less volume at once, which is easier to deal with. There is less potential for volatility on the streets." ... read full story / add a comment

There are good teachers, then there are the incompetent. Read more about them at Gombeennation.

It seems that Irish teachers are about to have a belated introduction to the hire-and-fire aspect of the world of work – but at least they’ll still have their holidays, counted in months, to recover from the trauma. This follows a revolutionary agreement forged between Department of Education, and school and teacher representatives.

Lindsey German and John Rees have declared all out war on the SWP central committee majority. There can be only one winner in this fight. If Lindsey and John lose the battle then a split is likely. Peter Manson reports on this fight to the finish. Full story at link.

The SWP leadership has continued the process of disempowering its former number one, John Rees, by recommending that he be removed from the central committee at the SWP annual conference, due to take place in London over the weekend of January 9-11 2009. Meeting on Wednesday November 26, the CC decided to exclude Rees from its take-it-or-leave-it slate, with only his long-time allies, Chris Bambery and Chris Nineham, voting against ditching him. ... read full story / add a comment

This is an extract from an interview with Ali Pichgah, one of the founding members of the oil workers’ shora (council) who later played an important role in the first major oil strike against the Theocracy. Ali details the oil workers actions which helped to bring down the Shah and the later struggles against the Theocracy. Comrade Pichgah is a supporter of Hands Off the People of Iran. How do you assess current workers’ struggles in Iran?

First of all, I must say that as long as capitalism rules class struggle exists. The capitalist order in Iran has managed to survive through repression and force, and the spreading of religious superstition and falsehoods. However, as far as the workers’ struggle is concerned, our ranks are divided; and as long as we can’t unite on a large scale, this repression will continue. Unity requires the building of strong, mass workers’ organisations. ... read full story / add a comment
