Chris Strafford reports on the HOPI School which had sessions on Women, Sanctions, Working class in Iran, National Minorities and 1979. Full text at link.

Hopi chair Mark Fischer opened the event by explaining that Hopi’s message has found a “resonance” in the workers’ movement. Two important unions, PCS and Aslef, have affiliated, proving the majority of the Stop the War Coalition leadership wrong. At both conferences the delegates found Hopi’s principled stand - against imperialist war, against the theocratic regime - was not too complex, but blindingly obvious. Mark reminded comrades of the growing threat of imperialist attacks on Iran, either directly from the USA or from its regional watchdog, Israel.

Iranian human rights lawyer Shirin Ebadi opposes any aggression by US Imperialism and also speaks on how repression in Iran has been stepped up. Full text at link.

With the international community fixated on Iran's nuclear ambitions, Ebadi says there is dwindling scrutiny of human rights in her homeland, and Ahmadinejad, has taken advantage of this to increase repression."Since the world started focusing on the nuclear programme, the human rights situation in Iran has worsened every day," says Ebadi, who won the Nobel prize in 2003. Dozens of activists have been prosecuted and condemned to prison, the lash or both. Arrests, detention and judicial harassment are increasing, with journalists, lawyers, students and trade unionists particularly targeted.

Full on trucker revolt going on in Spain is leading to mini-riots, looting, chaos. There are plenty of other revolts of a similar kind going on around the world right now and I suppose you could easily add in the Irish Fishermen. Forced cuts in Fuel use / fuel price hikes are the equivalent of steep wage cuts. But not much sympathy. PPL think. oh those nasty truckers and fishermen - they're causing global warming. James Turley, CPGB, writes on how the warmongers have stepped up their threats towards Iran. He says only principled opposition to both US/UK/Israeli Imperialism and to the Iranian Regime will win over mass support to the anti war movement. Full text at link.

Communists unequivocally oppose any imperialist action against Iran. It is clear to all that the invasion of Iraq has been a catastrophe for the Iraqi people, no matter what US and British propaganda says. It is also clear that this catastrophe has real roots in the objective dynamics of recent capitalist development and the relative decline of US global hegemony in the face competition from China and Europe - and so any subsequent adventure in Iran is likely to have similar results.

Following on from the affiliation by the PCS, the ASLEF union has now voted to affiliate to Hands Off the People of Iran. Nobody spoke against the motion to affiliate. Full article at link.

The national conference of Aslef, the rail drivers’ union, has voted unanimously to affiliate to the Hands Off the People of Iran campaign. This is the second major union to do so, following the decision of last month’s PCS conference, where only Socialist Workers Party comrades opposed affiliation. However, the SWP had no presence at the Aslef conference and nobody spoke against the proposal. Delegates from across the country spoke in favour, including general secretary Keith Norman. ... read full story / add a comment
