Peter Symonds analyses the latest moves by Bush & his cabal in the preparations for war against Iran. In particular Peter looks at the movements of senior US military officers. Full text at link.

The visit by US Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman Admiral Mike Mullen to Israel yesterday is one more indication that the two countries are actively discussing a military strike on Iran. Mullen’s trip followed news that the Israeli air force carried out a major exercise earlier this month involving 100 fighter jets, backed by midair fuel tankers and rescue helicopters, flying some 1,500 kilometres westward over the Mediterranean Sea—roughly the same distance as eastward from Israel to Iran’s nuclear facilities. ... read full story / add a comment

The MEK (The People's Mujahedin of Iran) held a meeting in Paris on Saturday. The MEK who, according to a France24 journalist, usually pay Afghani 'extras' by the day to boost numbers, bussed in Polish students, who were given a trip to Paris for €6, in order that they would attend the MEK propaganda rally. Some students went inside while others enjoyed lying around in Paris. A report published by Human Rights Watch denounced the MEK for poor treatment of dissident members in its camps in Iraq. ... read full story / add a comment

Zimbabweans today flocked to the polls. Not to exercise a choice - for there was none. But to make damn sure that after the secret ballot they had a bloody red finger.

No bloody red finger tonight means no democratic duty done today.

When the flock is shepherded by wolves it seems it prefers a bloody red finger to whatever else is on offer. Tomorrow Dr Richard Mugabe will be sworn in as President of Zimbabe. As one of the most articulate and poshest voices in African post-colonial history he will not feel the need to say fuck when he is sworn in. He will not besmirch democracy by cursing during his oath. ... read full story / add a comment

James Hansen the US climate scientist who first testified to the Senate 20 years ago and brought the attention of global warming to the mainstream has now testified that the CEOs of leading energy companies purposely lead a disinformation campaign on global warming which has resulted in a lack of action to solve the problem bringing humanity to the brink of disaster because we are possibly either just at or maybe even beyond the tipping point of runaway climate feedbacks. ... read full story / add a comment

In her latest article on political islam, Yassamine Mathers looks at how the womens movement has fared in Iran. She also addresses how imperialism offers no answers for women. Full text at link.

The women’s movement in Iran has become the subject of many claims and counter-claims over the last few years. Bush and the pro-war lobby tell us that Iranian women deserve a better regime and, of course, by that they mean the kind of ‘regime change’ we have seen in Iraq or Afghanistan... ... read full story / add a comment

"The cover story of the Drunken Captain serves the oil industry well. It falsely presents America's greatest environmental disaster as a tale of human frailty, a one-time accident. But broken radar, missing equipment, phantom spill teams, faked tests -- the profit-driven disregard of the law -- made the spill an inevitability, not an accident."

Palast has followed this story for years. He was part of the team that did the research to launch the locals’ court case for damages against the Esso oil corporation for poisoning for thousands of years their coastline, beaches, seas and livelihoods.

And those lovely people in the Irish Times this week had Krauthammer, that social Darwinist looper, with an article entitled: Drilling in the Arctic - Good the Economy & Good for the Environment.

But it’s like the nuclear lovin’ (Protocol 12), for-profit energy market fans and promoters of the neoliberalist Lisbon Treaty - Friends of the Earth Ireland, say, it’s about keeping the pressure on .... ha! ha! ha! ... read full story / add a comment

We bring to the attention of our readers David DeBatto's scenario as to what might occur if one of the several contingency plans to attack Iran, with the participation of Israel and NATO, were to be carried out. While one may disagree with certain elements of detail of the author's text, the thrust of this analysis must be taken seriously.

An Israeli Border Policeman on the perimeter of a farewell airport ceremony for French President Nicolas Sarkozy apparently shot himself on Tuesday in a incident that did not endanger the visiting leader, Israel Radio said.

The shooting occurred while a military band was playing and went unnoticed by Sarkozy and Israeli leaders at the ceremony. Dark-suited men then quickly ushered Sarkozy and his wife up the stairs of their plane. In a panic, Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, rushed up the stairs ahead of her husband. ... read full story / add a comment

Voters in the Republic of Ireland drove a stake through the heart of the Lisbon Treaty, a rewrite of the European Union Constitution, in a Referendum which took place on June 12 – The result was announced on Friday June 13 2008.

No campaigners made this a memorably unlucky date for EU boss Jose Manuel Barroso and his gang of privateers and wannabe military adventurers – a ruling class élite still smarting from its 2005 European Union Constitution referendum defeats in Holland and France.

14 non-EU national humans without visas escaped from a illegal immigrant detention centre near Paris after a fire was lit inside the building at the weekend. The defenders of Iran’s islamic regime, including those on the international left who maintain illusions in the radicalism of political islam, refer to Iran’s foreign policy, especially in the first decade of its existence after the 1979 uprising, as a sign of anti-imperialism within the islamic movement.
