This a statement and an appeal for solidarity from a group of Iranian workers based at the Iran Khodro car plant. Full statement at the link.

Friends and Fellow workers, International workers day is the day of international solidarity with workers. This is the day of protest against capitalism, against injustice in the world. Years ago Chicago workers started a struggle in support of their demands and many workers lost their lives. Workers are still fighting for their rights and thousands of workers have continued the struggle for the demands of May day. The Iranian government was forced to accept workers day only after years of worker protests. Iranian workers, cannot gather free of police presence to mark May day. For years everytime we tried to organise an independent march, the government intervened and it arrested many workers as in Saghez in 2004. Mahmud Salehi, one of the workers accused of organising the Saghez events is in prison , many other workers await similar sentences. ... read full story / add a comment

Socialist Party unveils manifesto
By Elaine Edwards, Ireland.com

The current coalition partners are driving a "race to the bottom" in workers' pay and conditions, Socialist Party leader and TD Joe Higgins said today.

Mr Higgins was speaking at the unveiling of his party's election manifesto in Dublin, and the sole Socialist TD in the Dáil is hoping at least one of his party's three other candidates will be elected on May 24th. ... read full story / add a comment

I was reminded of last weeks Phoenix while listening to the Irish head of Transparency International on Morning Ireland's business news section this morning. He was angelically critiquing companies here who may, (be forced to...) slip their standards abroad.

The Phoenix had an interesting article on this Irish Chapter of Transparency International (TI), on TI internationally, and on their links with the World Bank and curious unwillingness to demand Wolfowitz's resignation...

Yet another example of Western thought coming into conflict with Eastern culture. In this case there is a solution which might allow the Hindus to keep their Sacred Bull and will also protect humans and other animals from infection. The Animal Health Act 2001 allows for ill animals to be treated rather than slaughtered in all cases.

Ignorant officials are refusing to consider this. Full article at link. ... read full story / add a comment

The ceremonial opening of the power-sharing Executive at Stormont, with Sinn Fein’s Martin McGuinness sitting alongside Ian Paisley of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), is portrayed as a fairy tale ending to the Northern Ireland peace process. Here is an excerpt from a report on a Hands Off the People of Iran public meeting held in London immediately after the May Day march. HOPI activist Torab Saleth introduced the discussion. You may access the full article at the link.

Hands Off the People of Iran will have its Dublin launch on Thursday 10 May at 7.30 pm in the Teachers Club, Parnell Square. The initiative to set up this important campaign was taken by Iranian political activists and organisations who oppose the Islamic regime in Iran and also stand against any imperialist sanctions or attack. It has links with students, womens' organisations and workers struggles in Iran who are fighting for their rights there and are also against US or UN intervention.

Irish Supporters include: Senator David Norris; Aengus O'Snodaigh TD; Tony Gregory TD; Des Derwin; DCTU (Pers Cap); Joe Moore CWU (Pers Cap); Patrick Nulty Labour Youth. ... read full story / add a comment

The Federal Minister of Employment and Workplace Relations (big) Joe Hockey was forced this week to draw his leader’s attention to the oppressive reality facing average working Australians. Crushing debt, loss of penalty rates and other entitlements have forced many Australian families to the wall. Mortgagee sales in working class areas throughout the nation have increased at an alarming rate. John Howard, the darling of big business and the Corporate sector wondered why the common people were not eating cake! ... read full story / add a comment

Australian scientists Geoff Jones & Glenn Almany, both of the University of James Cook in Queensland have published the results of their long awaited "Nemo Fish" study.

They irradiated more than 300 female fish in the waters surrounding Papua New Guinnea in the South Pacific so as to track them and test the Walt Disney "in search of Nemo" theory that fish always return home (if not on your dishie - they're at home - irradiated - extinct or cutely searching their moma's and papa's).

At least 60% of the tracked fish returned home. It's not a land slide majority but is certainly indicative of a fair chunk of the fish in question sharing something important in common :- "their idea of home". Thankfully for 3rd world fisherpeople fish have remarkably short memories and so any of the more suspicious fish will soon forget how much studying went into their habits & movements.
