The Active Retirement Ireland (ARI) agm yesterday in Dublin Castle saw hundreds of angry older people letting a FF Minister know what they think of the private sectors control of the nursing home sector.

Is it not time that opposition political parties started to make this a serious issue? According to the ARI the state is obliged by law to provide public nursing home places, however that is not the reality on the ground. When you are old and need to go to a nursing home, an expensive private bed is your only option. The ARI organsiation seems to be the only one making this argument?

Here's a story about a Irish couple detained for a week on the back of a disgruntled employers claims

In January 2002, Murray and Gould asked Northrop Grumman if they could change jobs because the school owner did not pay them and demanded they clean his home.

After they complained, the school owner called Northrop Grumman and said the pair had never worked for him and Murray was getting his pilot's license so he could open a business in Yemen, the appeals court said. They were deemed to no longer have legal residency status under the work program.

The school owner also claimed that the couple opposed U.S. policy and believed that as long as the United States supports Israel terrorism will only worsen, the court said.

Northrop Grumman notified the Department of State and U.S. immigration authorities of the claims. Days later, the government took the couple into custody and began deportation proceedings.

Such is the logic of Blairs Britain: an anti war protester went to the Cenotaph and read out the names of British soldiers killed in Iraq. For this he was arrested, charged with holding an illegal demonstration and now has been convicted and fined. Theres an extract below and you can read the full story at the link.

Internal fighting within the Labour Party in the Sligo-North Leitrim constituency has deepened with the decision of the all the members (23) of the North Leitrim branch not to renew their membership of the party. Former Sligo-Leitrim TD Declan Bree, who comes from the left of the party, has been in sharp conflict with the party leadership. Bree said he regretted the resignation of former county council candidate Gabriel McSharry. Sources in Sligo say Bree is coming under strong pressure from supporters to leave Labour and stand as an independent socialist. Also Bree and several of his supporters did not attend Labour’s annual conference last weekend.

The Alma-Ata City authorities are determined to destroy the homes of settlers who have built poor but dignified living quarters on the outskirts of the city. Many of those who live in Shanyrak were driven out of their last homes by the collapse of industry in Kazakhstan, in the early and mid-nineties. With nowhere else to live, they moved to Shanyrak, and used old and second hand building materials to build modest homes in formerly uninhabited regions of the city. Now the Alma-Ata City authorities want the land, to build ‘entertainment complexes’ and elite flats for Kazakhstan’s ‘new rich’. ... read full story / add a comment

One of the world's best known investigative reporters, Seymour Hersch, is revealing in the next issue of The New Yorker magazine that Bush & co are actively planning a major air attack on Iran and that; one of the military’s initial option plans, as presented to the White House by the Pentagon this winter, calls for the use of a bunker-buster tactical nuclear weapon, such as the B61-11, against underground nuclear sites. One target is Iran’s main centrifuge plant, at Natanz, nearly two hundred miles south of Tehran.

A sad day for Irish journalism, and also very bad news for the many talented and dedicated staff who worked there.

This article is from the Sunday Times Ireland Edition, and I haven't seen or heard this news anywhere else. Even the CPI's own website doesn't have it. Therefore it's possible that this is nonsense. However the CPI has been under attack since its launch, so I wouldn't be surprised if they have finally decided to give in to the enormous pressure they have been under. ... read full story / add a comment

Hello from Guatemala. I am forwarding the article written by Sandra, she contacted me recently during my stay in Guatemala. If any of you took part of the presentation of the book "Fumigation: the human and environmental costs of chemical warfare in Colombia" last October in Trinity the following article will make sense.
I have seen the mentioned plantations in San Marcos and i believe that the the propossal fumigations here is going to finish with the farmers livelihoods and other plantations. I have been following close the case of the Mining company and there is a great video for anybody in Ireland interested to watch about the consultation propossed by the Indigenous people about the mining.

I thought this article in the Sunday Times was worth a look.

It seems that Christy Loftus, Shell's new hired help in Mayo, is saying that they are going to have to find a new pipeline route. He's getting €58K pper year for stating the obvious there, but he also seems to believe that there actually is a route they can find where the community will accept the danger posed by an experimental high pressure raw-gas pipeline. It looks as though Shell are also paying him to learn Irish, so some good will come of this scheme...

Further on in the article, Maura Harrington wonders about the possibility of someone giving birth at the Rossport Solidarity Camp. ... read full story / add a comment
