Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin's Saturday stall became the centre of a protest today against the latest attack by the Fianna Fail/Green Government against education. Over thirty activists gathered at the GPO to distribute leaflets explaining the cuts. According to Dublin spokesperson, Marcas Ó Mhaoldomhnaigh, many parents have been hit with bills costing hundreds of euro for books and school uniforms. "Many schools are set to lose special needs assistants and other vital resources. This government did not invest properly in the education system during the boom years and now we are seeing school children and their parents paying for their mistakes, it is completely unacceptable. Free primary education will truly be a thing of the past if we allow our schools to be further stripped of resources." read full story / add a comment

On Saturday 29th August, the indefatigable activist Tommy Donnellan of IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon) was arrested on the street in Galway while engaged in legitimate advocacy for the Palestinian cause, and against the Lisbon Treaty that will set in formaldehyde the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy that is so detrimental to that cause read full story / add a comment

The pro-Lisbon political parties do not need to raise funds for the 'Yes' to Lisbon campaign. Big business is directly funding their side of the debate. The announcement that Intel and Ryanair will spend hundreds of thousands of euro to try to achieve a Yes vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty represents an unconcealed attempt by big business to shape politics in its favour. Ryanair alone says it plans on spending over half a million Euro advertising for a pro-Lisbon vote, together with Intel that means up to a million Euro for a 'Yes' by only two private corporations. read full story / add a comment

A forum for workers is being organised next Wednesday in Limerick, to discuss how cuts in pay and jobs can be defeated. Starting at 8pm, in Pery's Hotel, the public meeting will be addressed by workers from Element Six, Mr Binman, recently on strike electricians and other workers involved in fighting to defend their jobs, pay and conditions. The forum, hosted by the Socialist Party, hopes to provide an opportunity for people to come along and hear first hand what is happening to workers in Element Six, Mr. Binman and other companies, and how they intend to fight back, as well as bringing together workers from across the region, to discuss their struggles, learn from others. read full story / add a comment

The dispute at MTL is escalating with hundreds of people taking part in demonstrations organised by the Port Workers Support Group. SIPTU members at the MTL depot in Dublin Port have been on strike since the beginning of July, resisting forced redundancies and pay cuts. The company shipped in scabs from the North and Britain on day one to steal the dockers’ jobs, and also got a High Court injunction preventing effective picketing. On Saturday August 22nd members of IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon) and Free Palestine Campaign spent 10 hours on the streets of Galway city providing information on why IFPAL is calling for a No vote in the Lisbon referendum as a protest against the EU's support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people. Almost 1000 leaflets were distributed to passersby, who were mostly supportive. The demonstration was joined in solidarity by a stalwart of the Shell to Sea Campaign, Naoise Ó Mongáin. read full story / add a comment

Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin protested today against the arrival of the British naval vessel the HMS Mersey (P283) in Dublin Port. The vessel, which is armed with a 20mm cannon and two machine guns arrived in Dublin yesterday morning and is due to leave on Thursday at 0600. Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin spokesperson Daithi Byrne said; ''This ship is representative of the same navy that is responsible for occupation and oppression across the globe. We are here today to tell the British Navy that there are not welcome in Ireland and to show our opposition to the display of British force. The open arm welcoming of this ship by the Government is insensitive and unacceptable.'' read full story / add a comment

Ireland has some of the world’s most important bogs. Peatlands comprise almost a fifth of Ireland’s land cover, and lock away a massive 1.2 billion tonnes of carbon. They are also home to around half our endangered bird species and around a quarter of endangered plant species. Peat bogs are amazingly efficient carbon sponges. A healthy bog typically stores 10 times more carbon per hectare than any other system, including forests. Peatland protection, according to the UN Environment Programme is “among the most cost-effective options for mitigating climate change”. Damage to peat bogs is now producing the equivalent of over a tenth of total global fossil-fuel emissions. read full story / add a comment

Seomra Spraoi, Dublins Autonomous social centre (10 Belvidere Court, Dublin 1) will host a meeting for those interested in reigniting the passion for critical mass. Nurturing and reclaiming our city, our commons, our communities Community Gardens are emerging throughout Dublin city. These small projects have large narratives. When we create community gardens we build alternative ways that our cities operate and can be made sustainable. We build positive spaces, social spaces and community. We address land use, workers rights and learn to collectively organise. We seed save, skill share, reclaim lost knowledge and recycle. We re establish a relationship with the cycles of life, with nature and become aware of our deep connection to our environment and each other. Community Gardens are radical spaces and the good news is that they are on the increase. Over the last 10 years the destructive development of Ireland has been driven by economic greed with little thought for communities, nature and our collective future. Our ecological foot print increased dramatically. In 2006 we were top of the list on our rubbish per capita per year of 31 countries surveyed in the EU. A large crowd of 200-300, made up mainly of families and workers from North and South city dockland communities, showed their support for the sriking dockers today in Dublin. Marching from the East Wall/North Wall and Ringsend/Irishtown, the meeting point for the supporters was the Point Depot Bridge from where they marched united to the gates of the Marine Terminal Limited. read full story / add a comment |
