Just before today's march in support of the people of Gaza, a number of activists marked the shelves of the Marks and Spencer's stores in Dublin with stickers bearing the slogan: Stop the Slaughter in Gaza- Boycott Israeli Goods. Although not everything for sale in M&S comes from Israel, the company has a unique relationship with the Zionist state, judging support for the country as a fundamental business objective. As Naomi Klein argues in her article from thenation.com (reprinted in the Guardian today), Israel's leaders can be comfortable that there is no economic cost to their genocidal actions in Palestine. US: OAKLAND : On January 1st, 22 year old Oscar Grant was executed by Officer Johannes Mehserle of the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) police in plain view of a number of people while he was laying face down on the ground with his hands behind his back and reportedly handcuffed. Cell phone videos show Mehserle pulling out a gun and shooting 22 year-old Oscar Grant in the back while he was lying face down on the ground on a subway platform. Alrighty netizens? So, the last of the turkey sandwiches have been dusted off and New Year's day hangover has become a memory as faint as that beer stain on the new carpet. Well, we here in Indymedia.ie have a favour to ask. We are hoping you have it in your hearts to extend the season of good will just a little bit longer. Just long enough to come down for banter and dance at a fundraiser we are organizing on January 15th, one of our little irregular efforts to boost the coffers of our decrepit server fund.
As editors, we more than most, realise that Indymedia.ie has seen it's ups and downs in contributions and content over the past while. Editors have come and gone, and the very nature of online publishing and user generated content has been fundamentally changed with the Web 2.0 revolution. But one clear fact remains, once the dust of discussion has settle: the Irish movement have yet to create a media outlet with the reach and scope of Indymedia.ie. Until something better comes along, Indymedia.ie remains a vital communicative node for those in struggle in Ireland, it bonds us together where usually we fracture. So, here comes the begging hand.....

Following widespread anecdotal reports and some media reports of the Palestinian Authority unleashing its security goons in the West Bank to suppress the spontaneous demonstrations in support of Gaza following the Israeli attack - I experienced a smidgeon of this in Hebron last Sunday week when a uniformed PA person attempted to stop my videoing - I decided to attend yesterday's demo in Ramallah organised by Fatah and the Peoples Committees to delve further. read full story / add a comment

Dear Ambassador Further to my telephone call to your office this morning I wish to reiterate some of the points which I made in the conversation with your secretary, and to elaborate on them a little further 1 I am sick to the teeth of the lies you are telling on RTE and in the Irish media about what is happening in Gaza. Israel has killed over 400 people there on the pretext that a cease-fire had been broken unilaterally by Hamas. You know this is not true. 2 You said that Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties but that Hamas place their civilians as shields for Hamas soldiers. You know that this is not true. Gaza is smaller in area than our smallest County, Louth, and is over-populated with 1.4 million people before your country reduced the population with murder from the sky. 3 Your Army invaded Gaza prior to en election and in the interregnum between the Presidencies of George W Bush and Barack Obama. 2008 has been a year of ups and downs for the Shell to Sea campaign, however generally the last months of the year have been very positive. This is a brief review of the year and a call-out for people to get involved next year when we expect a big push from Shell and the Government to again try to force this project through. At the moment, we are planning on the assumption that a pipe-laying ship (Solitaire or otherwise) will be back anytime from spring next year, to try to finally lay the offshore pipeline. read full story / add a comment

From white hot anger to silent, sometimes sobbing, despairing empathy, one is torn apart over here, from being an unwilling participant in, what amounts to, a snuff movie to witnessing and hearing about Israeli barbarism, where medieval torture is visited on a helpless people with the world as voyeur and where the coup de grace is never administered, but threatened in a "bigger Shoah" than Israel's, one doesn't have an alternative but to grow stronger for Palestine. read full story / add a comment |
