Kicking off a visual demonstration outside Harold’s cross stadium and working our way with the help of local activists in Northern Ireland down through Cork city, campaigners and supporters of Animal Rights Action Network held peaceful protests and tabling events to highlight the cruel greyhound racing industry in Ireland. During a week of action from August 24 to 30 we worked hard to get the facts out to the general public about the cruelty and exploitation of greyhounds in the racing industry. Over the week and during the month of September ARAN will be working hard to raise awareness of the Irish campaign to abolish cruel greyhound racing and to educate people about the horrors of what gentle greyhounds endure before, during and after their racing lives. read full story / add a comment

An allegation that the offices of the Sporting Press in Clonmel, Co. Tipperary, which describes itself as the “official organ of the Irish Coursing Club (ICC), has been raided within the past few days by the Garda Fraud Squad has been leaked by Coursing supporters. This allegation is contained on an Internet chat forum called the “Greyhound Knowledge Forum”. In the course of an exchange of views and comments by forum members, mainly in relation to Minister John Gormley’s upcoming decision on whether to grant a hare-netting license to the ICC, a person calling himself “Vinny Grennan” refers specifically to the presence of the Fraud Squad in the Sporting Press offices in Clonmel. read full story / add a comment

One of the great problems that people encounter in making up their minds about the Lisbon treaty is that, depending on who you talk to, the treaty can appear to be an altogether different thing. According to those who are campaigning for a Yes vote, it merely serves to tidy up the existing European treaties, with a few changes to allow the EU to function more efficiently. read full story / add a comment

In 1966 the Fianna Fail Government were labeled the “Mink Coat Government” by Deputy Sweetman in a Dail debate. Today they can as easily be labeled the “Mink Farm Government”. Every other political party except Fianna Fail has called for a ban on fur factory farms. Without Fianna Fail’s support there would be no fur factory farms in Ireland. Dublin Ógra Shinn Féin's Saturday stall became the centre of a protest today against the latest attack by the Fianna Fail/Green Government against education. Over thirty activists gathered at the GPO to distribute leaflets explaining the cuts. According to Dublin spokesperson, Marcas Ó Mhaoldomhnaigh, many parents have been hit with bills costing hundreds of euro for books and school uniforms. "Many schools are set to lose special needs assistants and other vital resources. This government did not invest properly in the education system during the boom years and now we are seeing school children and their parents paying for their mistakes, it is completely unacceptable. The pro-Lisbon political parties do not need to raise funds for the 'Yes' to Lisbon campaign. Big business is directly funding their side of the debate. The announcement that Intel and Ryanair will spend hundreds of thousands of euro to try to achieve a Yes vote in the upcoming Lisbon Treaty represents an unconcealed attempt by big business to shape politics in its favour. Ryanair alone says it plans on spending over half a million Euro advertising for a pro-Lisbon vote, together with Intel that means up to a million Euro for a 'Yes' by only two private corporations. read full story / add a comment

A forum for workers is being organised next Wednesday in Limerick, to discuss how cuts in pay and jobs can be defeated. Starting at 8pm, in Pery's Hotel, the public meeting will be addressed by workers from Element Six, Mr Binman, recently on strike electricians and other workers involved in fighting to defend their jobs, pay and conditions. The dispute at MTL is escalating with hundreds of people taking part in demonstrations organised by the Port Workers Support Group. SIPTU members at the MTL depot in Dublin Port have been on strike since the beginning of July, resisting forced redundancies and pay cuts. The company shipped in scabs from the North and Britain on day one to steal the dockers’ jobs, and also got a High Court injunction preventing effective picketing. On Saturday August 22nd members of IFPAL (Irish Friends of Palestine Against Lisbon) and Free Palestine Campaign spent 10 hours on the streets of Galway city providing information on why IFPAL is calling for a No vote in the Lisbon referendum as a protest against the EU's support for Israel's crimes against the Palestinian people. Almost 1000 leaflets were distributed to passersby, who were mostly supportive. The demonstration was joined in solidarity by a stalwart of the Shell to Sea Campaign, Naoise Ó Mongáin. read full story / add a comment
