Today, Thursday 9th July, about 50 members and supporters of the Ireland Palestine Solidarity Campaign (IPSC) held a loud and lively two hour demonstration outside the Israeli Embassy in Ballsbridge. Protesters chanted pro-Palestinian slogans and formed a ‘human wall’ at the gates of the embassy to symbolise the Apartheid Wall under construction by the Israeli government in the West Bank since 2002. Gardai informed the organisers that the embassy staff had all been given a half day due to the planned demonstration outside, meaning that the IPSC successfully closed down the embassy for half a day. read full story / add a comment

The Lisbon Treaty will result in: A big-state power grab; copperfastening Laval; permitting direct EU taxes; exclusive power regarding foreign direct investment, & Court power to harmonise; abolishing right to propose Commissioner; establishing an EU Federal State; requiring citizen loyalty; power to decide our rights; abolishing veto, binding us in 32 new policy areas; reducing National Parliament power; a self-amending treaty; enabling politicians over voters and militarizing EU. Electricians go on strike in response to a two year employer strike on pay. Since 2007 (roaring property boom) employers have been witholding pay that is legally due to electricians. They are now looking for a 10 per cent pay cut. Employers and unions came to an agreement, the employers broke the agreement, they now refuse to negotiate and are looking for a collective 10 per cent pay cut. read full story / add a comment

Derek Graham and Mairead Maguire recieved a warm and cheery welcome by family, friends, members of IPSC and other supporters.at Dublin Airport last night. At a well attended press conference in a nearby hotel, both Derek and Maréid gave a detailed and sombre account of their ordeal at the hands of the IDF. I arrived in occupied Erris on Friday evening having travelled down to take part in a national meeting of Shell to Sea groups. It had been a busy week for the campaign as the state had reacted to the ongoing resistance to Shell in Erris by seizing fishing boats, sending 7 people to jail without trial and banning two more from Co. Mayo. Not only had hundreds of state forces including the police, navy, air force and possibly the army been deployed to suppress protest in Erris but those of us doing solidarity work elsewhere had found from time to time that we were being followed by the secret police. read full story / add a comment

To mark the 5th anniversary of the International Court of Justice ruling on July 9th 2004 that Israel's Apartheid Wall was illegal and must be torn down, last Saturday, July 4th, Galway activists took to the streets to illuminate the reprehensible fact that the so called "international community" is still turning the blind eye to this egregious crime: Israel continues to construct this obscenity while The UN has taken no action to implement the ICJ decision and. with the exception of a few principled governments, states have put no pressure or sanctions, the EU continues to grant Israel trading privileges in violation of the ICJ's call on third states "not to recognise the illegal situation resulting from the construction of the wall" nor "to render aid or assistance in maintaining the situation brought about by such construction." International business, as is its wont, continues to finance and provide material support to the Wall and settlements. read full story / add a comment

The footage for the first video, Shell to Sea : Loitering with intent near the Rossport Solidarity Camp, people's champion Margaretta D'Arcy investigates was shot on 29th June close to and at the rear of the Rossport Solidarity Camp, when the behemoth pipe-laying vessel, the Solitaire, was laying the pipe connecting Shell's Glengad compound and the gas head and when the camp was overtly and intimidatory policed with Gardai at the front and rear sandwiching the Shell to Sea activists and it was the latter melange of Guards and their black attired Public Order cohorts that the redoubable and much loved Margaretta D'Arcy confronted. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday Wednesday 1st July around 100 Palestine solidarity activists gathered outside the GPO in Dublin to protest the kidnapping by Israel of 21 human rights activists from the Free Gaza Movement on Tuesday. Two of the abductees are Irish citizens, Nobel Laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire and Derek Graham, skipper of the Free Gaza boat ‘Spirit of Humanity’. read full story / add a comment

Sunday June 28th saw the most intense burst of direct action against Shell in Erris so far in this phase of the campaign to thwart the Great Gas Robbery and the destruction of Erris along with its community. A tripod on a road bridge near McGrath's Bar held up vital repair gear for the pipeline winching operation for over four hours. This was followed up by a five-person lock-on on the same road a bit nearer the Shell compound. Together, they delayed winching operations for twelve hours, and there were nine arrests in all. Meanwhile, three Solidarity Campers managed to sneak into the Shell compound at Glengad and get out without being arrested. read full story / add a comment

Yesterday, in Shop Street, activists and supporters of Shell to Sea and Galway Free Palestine Campaign found common cause and empathy in their resistance to the murderous abuse of state and corporate power: in the case of Israel; egregious and genocidal, in the case of Shell, the bending of corrupt governments to its will; from the judicial murder of the Ogoni 9 in Nigeria to, in Ireland, the jailing of the Rossport 5, economic treason through the giveaway of the Corrib field gas by notorious corrupt politicians, the criminalization and bulldozing of dissent through the deployment of Navy gunships, the shoot-to-kill Emergency Response Unit and a security outfit, hand in glove with the Garda, arm-in-arm with an openly fascist paramilitary group and favoured by Fianna Fail for its Ard Fheiseanna over the past few years. read full story / add a comment |
