About 50-70 people attended the pro-Israel protest at Leinster House today. It was hard to see exactly how many were there because so many media people went over to interview them. Someone said they counted twenty different journalist at one stage. The majority of the people attending were quiet and subdued, with a bit of praying and singing (more like humming) going on, but three or four stood at the barrier and shouted abuse at the Palestinian counter demonstration. This was called at short notice, and outnumbered the Zionists by about three or four to one. read full story / add a comment

On Sunday afternoon human rights activists in Limerick flash-mobbed two stores guilty of profiteering from trade with the illegitimate, delinquent Israeli state. Shoppers in Atlantic Homecare and later in Dunnes Stores stood open mouthed as a rousing chorus "Boycott Apartheid Israel" suddenly rang out across the store. read full story / add a comment

100 - 175,000 march in Barcelona against Gaza massacre and call for Israeli boycott. Due to the ongoing massacres being carried out in the Gaza strip at present, 700+ Palestinians killed, mostly women and children, the protest in the streets of Barcelona was attended between 100 and 175 thousand people, thats about 2 full Croke Parks. Activists, at some stage, mounted a construction scaffolding and attached a banner in Catalan which was a slight modification to the famous poem "First they came…" about the Nazis coming for, removing and disappearing all those they then opposed: the communists, the jews, the trade unionists, the Catholics, the intellectuals, the last of which was the poems author, Martin Niemöller (1892–1984), was part of. The National Chairperson of the 32 County Sovereignty Movement Francie Mackey has again highlighted and praised the efforts of all republican , socialist and progressive groups for their contribution to the temporary defeat of the EU Treaty in last Years referendum . However the apparent refusal of the national and intrnational capitalist elites to accept that popular decision and the increasing likelihood of their pushing ahead with a second referendum on the same Treaty in the upcoming year leaves all of us who opposed the Treaty on the grounds of national sovereignty , neutrality and principled socialist concerns with a common purpose . Just before today's march in support of the people of Gaza, a number of activists marked the shelves of the Marks and Spencer's stores in Dublin with stickers bearing the slogan: Stop the Slaughter in Gaza- Boycott Israeli Goods. Although not everything for sale in M&S comes from Israel, the company has a unique relationship with the Zionist state, judging support for the country as a fundamental business objective. As Naomi Klein argues in her article from thenation.com (reprinted in the Guardian today), Israel's leaders can be comfortable that there is no economic cost to their genocidal actions in Palestine. US: OAKLAND : On January 1st, 22 year old Oscar Grant was executed by Officer Johannes Mehserle of the BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) police in plain view of a number of people while he was laying face down on the ground with his hands behind his back and reportedly handcuffed. Cell phone videos show Mehserle pulling out a gun and shooting 22 year-old Oscar Grant in the back while he was lying face down on the ground on a subway platform. Alrighty netizens? So, the last of the turkey sandwiches have been dusted off and New Year's day hangover has become a memory as faint as that beer stain on the new carpet. Well, we here in Indymedia.ie have a favour to ask. We are hoping you have it in your hearts to extend the season of good will just a little bit longer. Just long enough to come down for banter and dance at a fundraiser we are organizing on January 15th, one of our little irregular efforts to boost the coffers of our decrepit server fund.
As editors, we more than most, realise that Indymedia.ie has seen it's ups and downs in contributions and content over the past while. Editors have come and gone, and the very nature of online publishing and user generated content has been fundamentally changed with the Web 2.0 revolution. But one clear fact remains, once the dust of discussion has settle: the Irish movement have yet to create a media outlet with the reach and scope of Indymedia.ie. Until something better comes along, Indymedia.ie remains a vital communicative node for those in struggle in Ireland, it bonds us together where usually we fracture. So, here comes the begging hand.....

Following widespread anecdotal reports and some media reports of the Palestinian Authority unleashing its security goons in the West Bank to suppress the spontaneous demonstrations in support of Gaza following the Israeli attack - I experienced a smidgeon of this in Hebron last Sunday week when a uniformed PA person attempted to stop my videoing - I decided to attend yesterday's demo in Ramallah organised by Fatah and the Peoples Committees to delve further. read full story / add a comment

Dear Ambassador Further to my telephone call to your office this morning I wish to reiterate some of the points which I made in the conversation with your secretary, and to elaborate on them a little further 1 I am sick to the teeth of the lies you are telling on RTE and in the Irish media about what is happening in Gaza. Israel has killed over 400 people there on the pretext that a cease-fire had been broken unilaterally by Hamas. You know this is not true. 2 You said that Israel is trying to avoid civilian casualties but that Hamas place their civilians as shields for Hamas soldiers. You know that this is not true. Gaza is smaller in area than our smallest County, Louth, and is over-populated with 1.4 million people before your country reduced the population with murder from the sky. 3 Your Army invaded Gaza prior to en election and in the interregnum between the Presidencies of George W Bush and Barack Obama.
