Annual hunt meeting draws 500 protestors.

Irish Examiner 27-12-2005

by Ciaran Murphy

THE Association of Hunt Saboteurs and BadgerWatch Ireland yesterday urged the Government to follow Britain's example and introduce legislation to ban all forms of hunting with dogs.

The call came after an anti-bloodsports protest at the annual St Stephen's Day hunt meeting in Tramore, Co Waterford.

Some protest groups have warned that the sabotaging of activities will be stepped up at hunting events during the holiday period. read full story / add a comment

THE Government reacted angrily last night after a leading US academic compared Taoiseach Bertie Ahern to a “shoe-shine boy” for President George Bush.
In a scathing attack on the Government’s foreign policy, the influential anti-war academic Noam Chomsky accused Mr Ahern of “shining the shoes” of the US President by allowing US warplanes to use Shannon airport.

Fine Gael has called on the Government to introduce a five point plan to cut A&E attendances by up to a 1/3. The plan which includes penalizing people who attend A&E units and also happen to be drunk, may put lives at risk.

The proposals ignore the fact that the vast majority of those attending A&E units are actually in need medical aid and further that the majority of those in attendance never cause any disturbance to staff or fellow patients.

One of the key planks of the policy calls for the doubling of A&E fees for those found to be under the influence of alcohol. The proposed fee of almost €100 will discourage people who may need medical aid from seeking it and will hit those on low incomes hardest, students in particular. read full story / add a comment

indymedias elsewhere seem to have found translations of the word 'indymedia' to their respective languages. Although English is the predominant language on www.indymedia.ie, linguistic diversity is welcome. Being based in Ireland, Irish IMC is best placed to give recognition to the Irish language.

Homogeny suits hegemony, and linguistic diversity helps, when it comes to thinking in different ways.

To this end, translating the word 'indymedia' or 'independent media centre' to Gaelic, also involves translating the concept - one which may mean different things to different people.

In keeping with the democratic nature of indymedia, it is important that as many people as possible contribute to the discussion. People don't need fluency to have a perspective. read full story / add a comment

Ingmar Lee writes a round-up style piece for Counterpunch in which he points out the harsh sentences and scare-mongering publicity directed at eco-activists in the USA and contrasts it with the soft-pedalling of the much more effective Pacifist direct action movement. Ciaron O'Reilly's name appears twice in the list. Tim Hourigan, Mary Kelly, Eoin Dubsky all get a mention too. read full story / add a comment

Whiler there isnt a breakdown on how much harassment takes place on non-union as distinct from unionised airlines i would imagine non-union workers suffer worse. Harassment still occurs though on all airlines. Anyone convicted of sexual harassment should be banned from flying for at least 5 years.

On Christmas morning next , a group of (mostly!) young people will be celebrating 29 years under water ....

In Clondalkin , Dublin , in 1976 , a group of supporters of the CABHAIR organisation (which raises funds for the dependants of Irish Republican prisoners) decided to seek sponsorship from their community for a Christmas morning swim in the Grand Canal : the swim has been held every 25 December since then , with all monies raised going to CABHAIR .
