On 8 June 2009 Mr Justice (Sir) Declan Morgan delivered the judgment in the marathon Omagh civil case. The judgment delivery ended the year long hearing leaving more questions unanswered than answered with its content less than convincing. The burden of proof in civil cases is based on the laws of probability and in this case Mr. Justice Morgan stretched the probability rule well outside the boundaries. The judgment in its entirety contained multiple ambiguities and inevitably the defendants will appeal. One can only assume that Mr Morgan is a highly intelligent man by the very fact that he has recently been elevated to the office of Lord Chief Justice, however this particular judgment may come back to haunt him. read full story / add a comment

Workers from across London will be giving up their lunch hour today (Friday) to attend a protest outside the Iranian Embassy against its Government's harsh treatment of trade unionists, something which is feared will get even worse in the wake of the current street demonstrations. Long before the current crackdown against Iranians disputing the recent presidential election result, the Government had been harassing and intimidating trade unionists. In Iran members of independent trade unions are frequently beaten up or thrown into prison. And there are concerns that attacks on trade unionists will increase as protesters look for other ways of demonstrating against the regime by taking part in strikes and other work-related protests read full story / add a comment
