The debate on the French Left about the forthcoming elections has parallels for the Left in Ireland – in particular for those leftwing Independent TDs and those on the Left who do not agree with supporting a government of the parties of the Right. In France the question is: should a united-left (anti-neoliberal) candidate support or be part of a government led by the Socialist Party (which will be a social-liberal or Blairite government)? In Ireland the question is similar: should the non-right-wing parties (Labour, Greens, Sinn Fein) be part of a government of the Right (FF, FG, PDs)? And should Independent TDs support a government of the Right? read full story / add a comment

A small number of Dáil candidates positioning themselves on the left rule out coalition with Fianna Fáil or Fine Gael, or doing side-deals. This number includes Séamus Healy (Tipperary South), a supporter of the Campaign for and Independent Left (CIL) and Joe Higgins (Dublin West) of the Socialist Party. I hope both these candidates are returned to the next Dáil, and that they are joined by like-minded deputies who will not sacrifice the left on the altar of social-liberal policies and its druids : Ahern, Kenny, Rabbitte and their colleagues. The issue may arise concretely after the May 2007 general election. Most opinion polls indicate that support for the two main conservative parties continues to fall significantly, a trend well-established since 1987. Similar problems confront the Left, worldwide. The most needy, most deprived are indeed very poorly served by the political establishment in Ireland. There is overwhelming evidence to suggest that most crime is linked to poverty, social exclusion, educational disadvantage and dysfunctional parenting, often each are combined. If we really want to reduce crime, we have to invest in the education and welfare of our disadvantaged children right from birth and even before birth. Early school-leaving has consistently identified as a major risk factor for offending, but there are no systematic supports for those at risk of dropping out of school. http://uk.360.yahoo.com/greagues2 read full story / add a comment

The story below explains why a member of the italian Senate. Franco Turigliatto, refused to vote for the Romano Prodi Government. The leadership of Rifondazione, the Refounded Communist Party, is threatening to expel Franco from the PRC. You can email solidarity greetings to Franco Turigliatto - details are at the link http://internationalviewpoint.org/spip.php?page=print_a...=1220 The rightwing behaviour of the Rifondazione leadership is a warning to Irish elected representatives positioned on the left who leave the door open to coalition with rightwing parties and implementation of a neoliberal agenda. read full story / add a comment

On 21 February, the Italian coalition government fell when the Prime Minister, Romano Prodi, resigned. This crisis came just four days after the magnificent 200,000 strong demonstration in Vicenza against the government's decision to approve the expansion of the US base in that town. The government did not get an overall majority in the Senate for a motion outlining its foreign policy, including keeping troops in Afghanistan and maintaining 'good relations' with the US. read full story / add a comment

The recent controvery about risk equalisation and community rating took a dramatic twist when Sean Quinn of the Quinn Insurance Group offered to take over the policies from BUPA that have expired and offering to continue their cover under the new insurer. He has also requested all those who have accounts with VHI to move to BUPA due to the overcharging as he sees it of equal policies and coverage provided by the quinn group under BUPA. Here is the statement in full from Sean Quinn on the rushing through of the legislation to close the loophole that has made the whole area of new companys entering the market uncertain. read full story / add a comment
