Bush is furious that patriot/s who still hold the values and laws of the USA sacrosanct, leaked the story of illegal bugging and surveillance to the media. indymedias elsewhere seem to have found translations of the word 'indymedia' to their respective languages. Although English is the predominant language on www.indymedia.ie, linguistic diversity is welcome. Being based in Ireland, Irish IMC is best placed to give recognition to the Irish language.

Homogeny suits hegemony, and linguistic diversity helps, when it comes to thinking in different ways.

To this end, translating the word 'indymedia' or 'independent media centre' to Gaelic, also involves translating the concept - one which may mean different things to different people.

In keeping with the democratic nature of indymedia, it is important that as many people as possible contribute to the discussion. People don't need fluency to have a perspective. read full story / add a comment

Ingmar Lee writes a round-up style piece for Counterpunch in which he points out the harsh sentences and scare-mongering publicity directed at eco-activists in the USA and contrasts it with the soft-pedalling of the much more effective Pacifist direct action movement. Ciaron O'Reilly's name appears twice in the list. Tim Hourigan, Mary Kelly, Eoin Dubsky all get a mention too. read full story / add a comment

Whiler there isnt a breakdown on how much harassment takes place on non-union as distinct from unionised airlines i would imagine non-union workers suffer worse. Harassment still occurs though on all airlines. Anyone convicted of sexual harassment should be banned from flying for at least 5 years.

A Chara ,
On Christmas morning next , a group of (mostly!) young people will be celebrating 29 years under water ....

In Clondalkin , Dublin , in 1976 , a group of supporters of the CABHAIR organisation (which raises funds for the dependants of Irish Republican prisoners) decided to seek sponsorship from their community for a Christmas morning swim in the Grand Canal : the swim has been held every 25 December since then , with all monies raised going to CABHAIR .

Bush confesses his criminality and hopes that his ‘act’ of contrition will save him from the dock. He has finally acknowledged that the invasion (and occupation) of Iraq was/is based on incorrect information (lies). Supporters and citizens who desperately hope that Bush’s admission demonstrates his contrition had their hopes dashed against the hard reality of further sordid deeds – the illegal 'bugging' and monitoring of US citizen’s private communications by the NSA. [Would anyone seriously expect this criminal administration to change character?] Bush’s admission is a political gesture, a strategic manoeuvre in response to increasing international disapproval of the dishonesty of his regime. read full story / add a comment

The Transport Workers Union in New York City has gone on strike and shut down the biggest mass transit system in the world. The TWU was founded in the 1930s by Irish radicals based on the industrial unionism ideas of James Connolly. The walkout by 34,000 workers shows that the ideas of Connolly are a living reality in New York City. read full story / add a comment
