The prosecution of a man for burning the Qur'an shows how Islamic blasphemy codes are becoming embedded in criminal law. Coming up with a legal definition of 'Islamophobia' will accelerate this process, says Sam Bidwell.

Solar farms are an ecological disaster. Birds frequently fly into them, mistaking them for water, while electrocution and incineration are common. But you won't hear about this in the mainstream media, says Chris Morrison.

If you live in south belfast, you might as well be living in a totally different country, to the rest of belfast.

If you live in south belfast, your experience of belfast, would be totally different to that of people who live, in the new lodge, lower north belfast, shankill and the Falls. read full story / add a comment

international / rights, freedoms and repression / other press Wednesday October 19, 2005 16:05 by cleaves
Should we mention how concerned media magnates are in the age of free information? Blogs, free presses and numerous other independent media groups, all have ultra-right regimes jumpin'. They cannot tolerate real free speech and the 'voices' of protest and dissent. Congratulations to all the people of the world who cherish their rights and freedoms – we salute you! All your combined small voices have become a deafening roar – the new sedition laws in Australia are an indication that you have been heard to the extent that you require silencing – the nefarious forces are on the run! read full story / add a comment

Marc Henzelin a legal expert from Geneva University has explained why he declined to defend Saddam Hussein saying the special tribunal is not compatible with international law and is little more than a soap opera.

Iraqi Saddam Hussein is charged with ordering the deaths of 143 Shi'ite Muslim men following a 1982 assassination attempt against him.
-
He might also face trial for genocide and war crimes for the killing of Kurds in the 1980s, as well as the suppression of uprisings by Shi'ites and Kurds in 1991.

The organisation Human Rights Watch said 200,000 potential opponents were killed during Saddam's regime between 1979 and 2003.

It would seem like the man ought be put to trial where the international community recognise the process, penalty and court. Does it not?

What's all the fuss about.

The recent leakage of 20 tonnes of plutonium and uranium fuel from sellafields Thorp processing plant has forced the closure of the Thorp processing plant. Radioactive waste leaked into a huge stainless steel chamber which is so radioactive it is impossible to enter. http://guardian.co.uk/nuclear/article/0,2763,1479527,00.html read full story / add a comment
