Turkish Political Prisoners Fight On!

A spokesperson for the Derry Committee of Solidarity with Hunger Strikers in Turkey has released a statement condemning further attacks on political prisoners currently being held in Turkeys infamous prison regimes, equating them with similar failed Thatcherite tactics used against Irish political prisoners of war in the early eighties. read full story / add a comment

News is circulating that yet another anarchist has died due to state repression on Mayday. Within hours of the Dublin anarchist picnic Nicolás David Neira Alvares was clubbed to the ground by up to eight police on the Bogota Mayday march and beaten on the head until he passed out. Police then prevented his comrades getting to him so it was some time before they could get him to hospital where he died earlier today. read full story / add a comment

Socialist Forum: Socialists, Elections and Parliament
Location: The Red Parrot, Dorset Street North Dublin
Time: 8.30pm Monday 9, May.

The mainstream media view of politics is that it is only what happens in parliament that matters. Street protests, local campaigns, and large scale mobilisations such as the Anti War Movement are ignored in favour of coverage of debates in the Dail. However the decisions that really control our lives are taken outside Parliament, and inside the boardrooms of undemocratic major corporations. This forum looks at the issue of socialists, elections and parliament. All are welcome to attend.

"A new criminal justice bill is currently being pushed through the Dáil by the Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell.

There are a WHOLE raft of measures in the legislation that have the
potential to seriously infringe on civil liberties. However, there are
two specific areas we feel need to be highlighted, in that they are
targeted at young people. These are the introduction of On The Spot
Fines and Anti Social Behaviour orders. It is our belief that the
introduction of these provisions will dramatically impact on Irish
people's civil liberties. That's why we've joined forces with the Union
of Students in Ireland and are launching an online petition opposing the
introduction of On The Spot Fines and Anti Social Behaviour Orders in
Ireland."

The election of Respect’s George Galloway in the UK general election should be welcomed by the anti-war movement – not least because it is a product of that very movement. Opinions differ, of course, as to the wisdom of the Respect project and the calibre of Galloway himself. Be that as it may, this election result should be acclaimed. read full story / add a comment

The banner headlines greeting the highly publicised and clearly leaked intent of the PSNI and the British DPP to charge South Armagh father of two Sean Hoey with 29 counts of murder relating to the 1998 bombing of Omagh have been denounced by his solicitor as a "media stunt" .

More worryingly this is not the first such stunt attempting to portray Sean Hoey in the public mind as guilty of the heinous crime of mass murder .
