Peter Benenson, the founder of the worldwide human rights organisation Amnesty International, died yesterday evening. He was 83.

Mr Benenson founded and inspired Amnesty International in 1961 first as a one-year campaign for the release of six prisoners of conscience. But from there came a worldwide movement for human rights and in its midst an international organisation -- Amnesty International -- which has taken up the cases of many thousands of victims of human rights violations and inspired millions to human rights defence the world round. read full story / add a comment

The LA Times editorial suggests that Bono would be good at selling "Brand America" if he were president of the World Bank and suggests that the problem is the lack of developed nations standing by their "aid" commitments.

Absolutely no mention of the stripping of assets, imposed "open" economies, complete lack of protection of local industries that the World Bank imposes on these nations. read full story / add a comment

Students voted in Trinity today to keep the boycott of Coke and Nestle. 1737 students voted to remove the boycotts (Yes) while 1926 students voted to keep the boycott (NO). The turnout was up by more than 200 votes on last years referendum and the margin of victory for the boycott is also increased. read full story / add a comment
