A group of about 12 people gathered at a rain swept corner of Fitzwilliam Square. We were a little late when the big black coffin finally arrived bearing the names of the five people on hunger strike in Greece. Initially the idea of a coffin was thought to be a little morbid by some, but it was agreed, that unfortunately death is more of an inevitability if the Greek state continue their deliberate persecution of these individuals. The second European Social Forum (ESF) is taking place in Paris this week. Last year it took place in Italy and it was from the peoples assembly at that ESF that the decision was taken to organise the February 15th International day of mobilisations against the War on Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of trade unionists, socialists, anti-capitalists, NGOs, peace activists, community groups and concerned citizens are meeting in Paris to discuss opposition to neo-liberalism, privatisation, war, environmental destruction and racism. As the controversy continues over the admission into the Labour Party of former Fine Gael councillor Jimmy McGarry, Labour leader Deputy Pat Rabbitte, speaking to The Sligo media in his first interview on the issue, pointed out that a democratic decision had been taken to welcome Ald.
