Behind the dykes of the flat, northernmost German province of Schleswig-Holstein, the Frisian minority struggles for the future of it’s language. The North Frisian Institute has just published last year's financial results and this year's budget, and while last year showed a deficit of 28,000 Euro, this year's budget has an increased deficit of 36,000 Euro – even though one part-time staff member has already been laid off earlier this year. 'We have to save so much that the Institute will suffer and I do not know whether it will be able to recover,' says Tede Boysen, chairperson of the institute, to Eurolang. The Language Institute provides books and educational materials as well as conducting academic research and is the sole institution in the language area to provide such work. The North Frisian minority is estimated to be 10.000 active speakers with nine different dialects.

Jonah House is a resistance community based in Baltimore. It was founded by Liz McAlister & the late Phil Berrigan in 1975 out of the expperiences of the draft board raid movement of the ant-Vietnam period. It pretty much gave rise to the plowshares movement in 1980 and has nourished many plowshares communities. Bill Frankel-Streit was arrested with me on the eve of the last Gulf War disarming a B-52 Bomber in upstate New York - it was put oout of action for the length of the Gulf War. We all received a year in prison. Bill is back in jail for resisting this war. The 3 Dominican nuns have recently been found guilty of sabotage for a weapons inspection and a disarmament action on an ICBM missile silo in Colarado. Most normal people tend to take a position on something like the War based on their unspoken values or prejudices, then try to rationalise that position post-facto. Most normal people, unfortunately, also take rational criticism of such a position as a direct attack on their egos. And in fairness, most normal people also get a kick out of insulting their opponents, especially in an anonymous forum such as this (mea culpa). This article is not meant to start a pissing contest between pro- and ant-war people; I would genuinely like these topics argued about intelligently and honestly by all. read full story / add a comment

Earlier this year we saw some airlines leave Shannon following some spectacular direct action. “Good, Law-abiding” ‘ordinary’ airlines like World, North American and Miami Air. Just the folks you want to move your troops, DU and high grade explaosives. At the time we had Aer Rianta and some of the Chamber of Commerce lamenting their departure as tragic.Well- Good news !
